Position Summary:

The High Performance Computing Group at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics is looking for strong generalists with backgrounds in HPC and scientific computing to aid in the support and development of the laboratory's HPC environment. This includes individuals with backgrounds in systems administration, systems engineering, performance engineering, and development of computational science codes. Ideal candidates will have a career path that reflects flexibility in interdisciplinary environments in support of scientific and high performance computing activities.


  • Bachelor's degree and minimum 3 years of relevant work experience in HPC environments

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

  • Ability to interact and collaborate with group members, faculty, researchers, students, IT professionals, and vendors as well as work independently

  • Experience mentoring and supervising students

  • Experience contributing to and/or leading the design, evaluation, procurement, deployment, and support of technical solutions (e.g. user applications and frameworks, user software stacks, system software, storage systems, batch queuing systems) reflecting best practices

  • Excellent troubleshooting and methodical debugging skills at all levels of the stack

  • Excellent command of UNIX/Linux and mainstream scripting languages

  • Reasonable experience with developing and debugging software in C/C++/Fortran that utilizes MPI

  • Experience with git and/or other version control systems

  • Experience with configuration management and/or Cl/CD

  • An interest in the laboratory's scientific mission

  • A dedication to proactive customer service and continuous improvement

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with HPC storage products (GPFS, BeeGFS, pNFS, and Lustre) and paradigms (HDFS/MPl-1O)

  • Experience with the concepts, tools, and uses of contemporary data science and machine learning

  • Experience interacting with and contributing to open source projects

  • Experience using DOE NNSA, DOE Office of Science, DOD HPCMP, or NSF XSEDE computing resources
