Assistant Director of LGBTQ Life

The Assistant Director reports to the Director of LGBTQ Life (Director) in the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center (BIC) and serves as a representative of the BIC and the work that we do to help support our diverse LGBTQ student population across all UR schools. The Assistant Director must have a thorough understanding of the needs and concerns of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer) students and will have a presence in and assist in serving the needs of undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral LGBTQ students at the schools of arts & sciences, business, education, engineering, music, nursing, and medicine & dentistry. The Assistant Director provides leadership and advocacy for all LGBTQ students by generating innovative ways to provide service and increase support within student life. The Assistant Director will also educate UR school populations about LGBTQ Inclusivity and plan LGBTQ events and programming. The Assistant Director will utilize a diversity, equity, and inclusive lens as they have our intercultural, intersectional, and identity-based programming needs in mind.


LGBTQ Program & Event Planning across UR Schools

  • Plans, manages, implements, updates, and assesses programs and activities such as Safe Zone Training for students and other related events in conjunction with student organizations, other University departments, and community partners.

  • Plans and implements multiple major (over 100 participants) LGBTQ events across UR schools including but not limited to the Meet & Greet during Orientation, National Coming Out Day Lecture, the LGBTQ Leadership Lecture Series, and Rainbow Graduation.

  • Advises and supervises students who run LGBTQ meet-up and discussion groups.

  • Utilizes a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens in all programs and interactions with different stakeholders.

  • Serves as primary point person for all LGBTQ events, making independent decisions to arrange event logistics and programming.

  • Creates, implements, and manages unique LGBTQ programming to meet the needs of our LGBTQ students across UR schools.

  • Assists in recruiting discussion group leaders and LGBTQ Leadership Lecture Committee Members.

  • Manages in-person and virtual event communications and online registration forms in different databases.

  • Creates and monitors communication timelines based on varying event schedules. Draft, build, test and send event emails (invitations, reminders, day before/of and follow ups).

Leadership and advocacy for the student LGBTQ community; generating innovative ways to provide service and increase support

  • Gathers and analyzes data in collaboration with students and campus colleagues in all university schools to assist in addressing issues of LGBTQ diversity, campus climate, culture, and inclusion.

  • Serves as a primary point of contact, resource, and support for LGBTQ students and provides direct support and connections with campus and community resources.

  • Serves as a consultant and liaison to the LGBTQ student community and the LGBTQ life team across UR schools.

  • Serves as direct consistent LGBTQ life presence in all UR schools.

  • Promotes integration and alignment with the University’s Meliora Vision & Values.

Educates UR School Populations about LGBTQ Inclusivity

  • Utilizes a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens in all educational endeavors and interactions with different stakeholders.

  • Plans, implements, and assesses programs and activities that meet Medallion Leadership program criteria.

  • Facilitates and updates intercultural and LGBTQ trainings on a variety of diversity, equity, and inclusion topics.

  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures, newsletters, brochures, web pages, etc. that can be used to promote inclusion and equity.

Administrative Duties

  • Responsible for building, managing, and tracking all expenses and revenues to fit within the LGBTQ event budgets.

  • Represents the BIC to the public and works to increase awareness of the organization.

  • Completes research, best practices, and benchmarking projects as assigned.

  • Ensures staffing for and attends all signature LGBTQ events and programs.

  • Ensures staffing for all non-signature LGBTQ events and programs.

  • Serves as an active member of the LGBTQ Advocacy Committee, College Diversity Roundtable, and other committees as deemed appropriate.

Other duties as assigned


  • A bachelor's degree is required.

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • A minimum of 2 years in advising and program management and execution or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.


  • Must be able to take initiative and function independently – many times being the sole person in the office, must be able to pay close attention to detail and prioritizes multiple projects.

  • Ability to express ideas clearly (written, verbal, and non-verbal), adjusting language and/or terminology to meet the needs of diverse audiences.

  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite/Google Docs, Canva, and openness to learning new systems.

  • Enthusiasm for engaging with others in the promotion and/or awareness of intercultural competencies, intersectional identities, LGBTQ issues, and international communities.

  • As this is a fast-paced environment with different ebbs and flows during the semester, this Assistant Director must be able to take initiative and function independently.

  • Must have superior attention to detail, but also the ability to understand and appreciate big-picture program development.

  • Exceptional project management and time management skills with the ability to handle high pressure, last-minute, urgent requests.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communications (oral and written) skills are necessities, as well as the ability to manage a high volume of projects with competing deadlines.

  • Possess well-developed leadership ability, strong organizational skills, and self-motivation.

  • Innovative problem solver possesses a “can-do” attitude, self-starter and take initiative with new projects.

  • Strong editorial skills. Needs to be able to both write and edit effectively and efficiently.

  • Strong interpersonal skills; excellent internal and external customer service.

  • Demonstrates strong critical thinking skills and solution-orientation approach to challenges.

  • Ability to keep a calm exterior in the face of high-pressure situations.

  • Comfortable working within limited budgets while managing, building, and tracking them.

  • Need to lift 10+ pounds, to move boxes and supplies, be able to quickly travel between locations on campus on foot and willingness to be outside in various weather conditions.

  • Position requires evening and weekend work to staff/run events appropriately.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $20.92 - $29.29 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
