Responsibilities

The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) Office for Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs (GEPA) seeks an accomplished research leader to serve as the Associate Dean for Mentor Development. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in graduate student and postdoctoral scholar mentoring and advising, graduate/postdoctoral program leadership, equity and inclusion, and faculty training and development. The successful candidate will develop, promote and implement good mentoring practices that result in a culture of respect, leadership, equity, inclusion, and creativity. It is expected that a component of this effort will involve leading the formalized instruction of research faculty (and others in mentorial roles) in best mentoring practices.

The Associate Dean will report to the Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs in the SMD to execute the development and management of the UR-MENTOR training program. The Associate Dean will be co-supervised by the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the SMD. The objective of the UR-MENTOR program is to implement effective mentoring practices towards the goal of fostering an environment that nurtures SMD’s mentors’ and trainees’ professional competency, autonomy, and attitudinal beliefs of success and inclusion. The Associate Dean will be responsible for collaborating with key University and SMD constituencies (including the CTSI, Office for Faculty Development, the Provost’s Office, etc.) to develop and carry out the UR-MENTOR program in a way that contributes to the recruitment, retention, and career goals of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. The Associate Dean will also collaborate with training grant directors in relation to grant writing and mentor program development/delivery. The Associate Dean will coach faculty regarding mentorship and will help mediate graduate student and postdoctoral scholar issues related to mentor/mentee relationships. The Associate Dean will advise the SMD Sr. Associate Deans and SMD senior leadership regarding faculty mentor development efforts to advance the SMD's scientific mission and vision.

In this new role, the successful Associate Dean will be an impetus for change and passionate about infusing values around equity, inclusion, climate, and culture into all mentoring programs and activities. The Associate Dean must work in dynamic ways within a sophisticated, complex, and fluid environment. The position is a highly specialized, hands-on appointment dedicated to improving SMD faculty skills and feelings of competency related to mentoring graduate and postdoctoral learners.

To interface successfully with faculty, postdocs, graduate students, staff, and programs, the candidate should have doctoral-level training and experience with research and/or research mentor training practices in academic and/or other organizations. The Associate Dean will hold a primary faculty appointment as a researcher or have extensive mentor training experience, with the department and rank to be commensurate with area of expertise and experience. The Associate Dean role will comprise at least 25% FTE, with the potential for additional effort depending on the individual candidate’s circumstances. The balance of effort will comprise research, teaching, scholarship, and/or other duties individually negotiated with the primary department. The candidate must be eligible for academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher.
