Directs the planning, implementation, coordination, operation and evaluation of the University’s Benefits programs as part of the University’s strategic planning. Provides day-to-day direction and supervision of the activities and operations of the Benefits Office, including management of the functions of one or more areas of the benefits program. Exhibits exceptional knowledge in University benefits and Total Rewards administrative procedures; champion organizational values that support the mission of the University. Assists in the overall development and management of the benefits program and office. Provides professional direction to staff.


  • Oversees changes in benefit plans, practices and procedures required to provide competitive benefit plans. Assists Director in the evaluation of recommendations for improvements in benefits, policies and procedures. Oversees communication and promotion of benefit programs to University faculty, staff and retirees.

  • Develops, designs and implements new innovative benefit programs. Develops relationships and collaborations with key faculty, staff, departments, as well as with internal and external vendors. Manages internal and external sources to communicate and educate employees about new programs and resources.

  • Plans, organizes and directs the day-to-day activities of the Benefits staff. Recommends, develops and implements operational changes to increase the effectiveness of the department.

  • Provides leadership, direction and counsel to staff. Maximizes human capital by developing others’ talent, motivating, recognizing and rewarding contributions. Holds others accountable for measuring and meeting performance goals and addresses low performance.

  • Analyzes and interprets data, statistics and financial information relating to the Benefits Program.

  • Communicates and interprets benefit plans, policies, procedures and services to the University community with emphasis on problem solving related to individual and group concerns.

  • Coordinates records and services with recordkeepers and insurance carriers and resolves special problems.

  • Keeps abreast of trends as they relate to the Benefits Program, including changes in state and federal legislation.

  • Other duties as assigned, including assuming management responsibility in absence of the Director.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field required

  • 5 years of relevant experience required

  • 2 years of supervisory experience required

  • or equivalent combination of education and experience required

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills required
