Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The staff athletic performance specialist is a key position in our athletic performance programing- responsible for servicing clients of our athletic performance program in partnership within our rehabilitation and medical service lines. This position is responsible for developing and executing a performance curriculum which utilizes other ancillary services within the department to enhance our participants’: movement, strength, mindset, nutrition, and athletic ability.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates and monitors the participant’s functional abilities and applies various tests, measures, and interventions.

  • Obtains supportive information from other sources, e.g., family members, coaching staff, nursing staff, etc.

  • Recommends to the participant, family, coach and or physician (when applicable) modification of the program as needed.

  • Instructs participants in the use of equipment and techniques and counsels to ensure understanding and acceptance.

  • Assures appropriate safety practices and maintenance of equipment and supplies.

  • Assists in planning for the participants return to sport activities.

  • Abides by universal precautions for disease transmission prevention

  • Ensures that all participants read, sign, and receive a copy of facility liability waivers as well as past medical history or physical activity readiness questionnaires.

  • Maintains all required records and summaries.

  • Keeps current in the field by reading, attendance at selected professional meetings and seminars, and meeting all mandated recertification/licensure requirements.

Client Services

Client will exhibit strong Foundational Knowledge, and Treatment Interventions in the field of athletic performance enhancement and wellness associated with the following populations:

  • Peak Performance Population – Assisting healthy athletes reach top performance ability mentally and physically through the use of physical training and other ancillary services.

  • Injury Recovery Population – Creating a plan to deal with post-injury recovery that will utilize proper physical interventions and motivation strategies to ensure the best recovery for the athlete. Then the focus will shift to return to sport planning to ease the transition of returning to competition.

  • Adult lifestyle Change Population – Assisting adult athletes or sedentary adults with initiating, sustaining or enhancing their physical performance through an appropriately designed exercise, nutritional, and motivational program.

Performs tasks and communications for Senior Athletic Performance Specialist such as:

  • Communicates with the UR Medicine Sports Medicine team to develop systems for collaborating with athletes

  • Ensures consistent implementation of the athletic performance philosophies of the program

  • Create performance programing for in-house and outreach educational/screening programs when applicable

  • Tracks performance, needs, and challenges of the program and reports results to the senior athletic performance specialist

  • Ensures and maintains exceptional levels of customer service and service excellence by providing access to services and high quality consistent programing

  • Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.

  • Uses opportunities to continuously improve performance and maintain high level foundational knowledge by staying current in the field of athletic performance enhancement.

  • Uses data to support training delivery actions. Seeks out information and best practice approaches to achieve excellence in all aspects of role.

  • Collects participant feedback and participates in ongoing efforts to achieve quality outcomes and contributes to the interpretation, application, and generation of new knowledge.

Documentation

  • Documents according to unit and service standards.

  • Documents educational interventions provided to participant, coach and family.

  • Documents adverse events to unit and service standards.

Qualifications:

  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist or equivalent (NSCA-CSCS, ACSM, or NASM)

  • ATC preferred but not required

  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs

  • Demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills (written and oral)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology/physical education, sports sciences, or related field (Master’s degree preferred)

  • Previous experience preparing training programs

  • At least 21 years of age
