Full Time 40 hours Grade 092 Pharmacy SMHResponsibilities
As a pharmacy technician provides specialized support in managing, operating, and training other users on various pharmacy cleanroom production automation technologies (such as but not limited to workflow management devices, IV compounding robots, and automated compounding devices). Responsibilities and tasks are consistent with state, federal and local regulations, consistent with the functions of a pharmacy technician.
Oversee and lead the training of technicians on the various systems and devices.
In collaboration with the particular pharmacy’s Compounding Service or Cleanroom Pharmacist Manager or Supervising Pharmacist and other Trainer Specialists as needed, develop training tools (including adapting those provided by vendors) and documentation methods for training identified individuals to operate and perform basic troubleshooting tasks on the systems.
Proper procedures related to the vault/controlled substances, including production processes, waste tracking, BUD testing, DEA 222 forms and appropriate report generation.
Provides feedback to staff when issues are identified or additional training/information is required to improve performance with tasks/processes related to the various automation systems. When patterns arise, or performance issues are identified, feedback is provided to the direct supervisor of the individual.
Attend vendor-sponsored training sessions for existing and new cleanroom compounding technologies as introduced to URMC.
Process and Procedures:
Develop and maintain SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) related to operation of the various systems, in collaboration with Automation Technology Specialists at other URMC sites with identical or similar systems and with final review and approval by the pharmacist Manager or Supervising Pharmacist at the affected site(s) and the Assistant Director of Pharmacy – Compounding Services.
In collaboration with other appropriate supply chain colleagues and pharmacist manager(s), develop production schedule for bulk preparation items to maximize efficient production and minimal waste.
Meet or exceed production goals (eg maximizing extent of safety technology use, minimizing downtime or alternate strategy use, maximizing production throughput, etc) as established by department leadership. Use analytics tools in various automation systems.
Provide data on robot efficienc y and functionality to particular site pharmacist Manager or Supervising Pharmacist and other appropriate managers as identified.
Maintain working knowledge of supply status of system(s) disposables/consumables, drugs (including new vendors) and diluents, and develop alternative strategies for substitutes or alternate vendors in cooperation with site pharmacist manager (and other URMC sites with similar technology).
In addition to mastering basic troubleshooting skills on the system, this specialist will receive additional advanced troubleshooting training to assist in identifying issues and collaborating with the various system vendors in developing and applying corrective actions.
Meets periodically with the site pharmacist manager/supervising pharmacist and applicable Technician Supervisor to provide updates on issues and project strategies for future development and use of the technology.
Meet periodically with other URMC sites’ Automation Technology Specialists to share ideas and insights.
Ensures that all issues are reported appropriately both internally and to specific vendors as appropriate.
The responsibilities outlined above will take place during staffing of the particular compounding automation technology (buffer room, TPN room, etc), including performing daily shift functions directly related to operating the various device(s).
Staffing will be consistent with current obligations for a pharmacy technician in the inpatient pharmacy, including evening and weekend commitments if applicable. Coordination of time off will be with the other identified automation-trained technicians on other shifts in order to maximize the on-line staffing time for specialists assigned to the robot.
Performs all duties of a certified, registered and licensed technician based on the current pharmacy technician career ladder and area assigned (i.e. vault), incorporating the above expectations into daily tasks and activities in the area of practice
Meets or exceeds the minimum requirements of all levels of the Technician Career Ladder up to Specialist for the area of practice.
Ability to work as a team or independently. Independent thinking and decision-making skills a must.
Certification by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Must meet ongoing education requirements to maintain certification.
Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in hospital pharmacy, including experience in applicable specialist area
Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite products (Excel, Word, SharePoint, Access) preferred
