Responsibilities
General Purpose:
Assists the leadership team in addressing clinically related problems and opportunities to facilitate interdepartmental resolution of multidisciplinary issues and identify opportunities for improvement as it relates to flow of instrument / supply flow from Central Service to the operating room and back to central service.
Monitors the day to day activities of the central service technicians as it relates to workflow and performance. Provides feedback concerning performance of employees and departmental operations.
Must be able to decontaminate, process, assemble, store and distribute medical devices and supplies used in patient care while adhering to principles of asepsis and infection control. Also, will be responsible for overseeing the training of Sterile Processing employees. Must be knowledgeable of the regulations and guidelines such as AAMI, TJC, OSHA and CDC.
Specific Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Central Service supervisor and/or Manager the Central Service Work Leader is accountable for the following responsibilities:
Performs all aspects of the technical job responsibilities including decontamination, assembly, sterilization, Storage, Cart set up, distribution and other duties as needed.
Runs daily equipment tests as necessary.
Uses specialized washers, sterilizers and other equipment as per manufacturer’s guidelines.
Follows policies, protocols, techniques and manufacturer’s guidelines. Is knowledgeable of and adheres to regulations.
Chooses supplies, instruments and equipment for surgical cases.
Replaces lost or damaged instruments from stock and communicates to manager when supplies are needed.
Documents and maintains records for sterilization and repair of instruments and equipment
Is knowledgeable of loaner instrument policies and procedures and is able to train others.
Has basic knowledge of implant instrumentation and is able to troubleshoot with the OR as needed. Has the ability to clean and process implant instruments.
Serves as a preceptor/ trainer for new employees in all the processes of Central Service while following policies, procedures, and process flow. Provides hand-on training to new employees on all task assignments pertaining to SPD.
Works with educator to set up and maintain training protocols.
Assists Educator in maintaining training records and assures the annual competencies and clinical protocols are upheld and regulations and guidelines are practiced.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Position involves standing, bending and lifting. Must be able to safely lift or carrying up to 50 pounds.
Requirements:
Recommended: Bachelor’s degree. Previous Operating Room or medical surgical experience is a health care facility preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft office and Censitrac instrument tracking preferred. Must demonstrate acceptable communication skills and understand verbal and written instructions.
Required: Certification by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) previously known as IAHCSSM, as a Registered Central Service Technician or must show proof of being grandfathered into the system.
