Provides overall supervision of a laboratory involved in patient care functions affecting the well-being, comfort and safety of patients.


Under general direction of a Laboratory Director (or others of comparable management responsibility) performs several or all of the following:

Translates administrative and departmental policies into effective operating procedure.

Interprets and oversees laboratory policy in relation to: proper adherence to standardized methods of assay; discipline; schedules; safety; professional conduct; evaluation and reporting of laboratory results; preventive maintenance procedures and records; laboratory housekeeping.

Designs and reviews Quality Control procedures.

Develops criteria for the evaluation of results with respect to their general correctness and analytic reliability and oversees enforcement of these criteria.

Inspects and approves maintenance service performed by outside vendors on Laboratory instrumentation and Equipment.

Collaborates with Lab Director(s) and others in development of new methodologies.

Evaluates new instrumentation and products and shares with Laboratory Director(s) in final selection of new instrumentation and products.

Supervises overall the final review of laboratory reports prior to release to the physician, or for inclusion in permanent medical records.

Develops and oversees instructional and training protocols.

Performs duties of a supervisor or assistant supervisor as needed.

Confers on regular basis with Laboratory Director(s) and medical staff concerning laboratory tests.

Keeps abreast of new developments in his/her respective field of Clinical Laboratory Science.

Conducts Personnel Performance Reviews: evaluates performance of personnel for which he/she has direct responsibility in accordance with established format. Conducts Evaluation Interviews.

Oversees work schedules and allocation of staff.

Oversees the efficient operation of the Laboratory to assure prompt reporting of laboratory results.

Coordinates and consults with other laboratory supervisors and management personnel to insure adequate integration and synchronization of various laboratory operations.

Participates in supervisory on-call coverage and in the general supervision of the laboratory on weekends, as needed.

Assists in preparation of budgets.

Recommends action as to hiring, transfer, promotion, termination and other personnel actions.

Assists in providing instruction in Clinical Laboratory Science to medical students and house staff.


Master's degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Serology, or equivalent sub-specialty certification; and 5 years of clinical laboratory experience; or Bachelor's degree in any of the above disciplines with 6 years experience in clinical laboratory science; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
