The Department of Psychiatry is seeing a time as reported clinical research position for a randomized controlled trial of a psychosocial intervention funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Under the direct supervision of the project coordinator, the successful applicant will administer brief motivational interviews for substance use. He or she will also assist in collecting data through brief screening assessments, research interviews, and other standardized assessments with justice-involved individuals in a pretrial jail diversion program or a chemical dependency program. Specific details and additional responsibilities are listed below.
Brief Motivational Intervention. Administer a manualized, in-person, 1:1, Brief Motivational Intervention for substance use to people in a pretrial jail diversion program or a chemical dependency treatment program. This intervention ranges from 30-50 minutes in duration and involves reflective listening, examination of consequences of subjects’ substance use, and creating a subject-driven action plan for decreasing substance use. The intervention also involves administration of standardized psychological assessments to gather data on substance use patterns and consequences over time.
Additional Project Implementation Tasks.
Screen individual’s onsite for eligibility to participate and obtain informed consent.
Interview individuals at the program to assess personality traits, history of violence and suicidal behavior, and criminal history.
Ensure open and direct communication with our community partner sites.
Review recordings of therapy sessions and code therapist fidelity to the manualized intervention.
File paper data.
Attend research team meetings to ensure communication among the study team.
Provide training and ongoing supervision for other study staff regarding the intervention and intervention fidelity maintenance
The successful applicant must have reliable transportation and will subscribe to the department’s goal of creating a culturally competent environment by treating research participants and colleagues with respect. He or she will maintain eligibility to participate in human subjects research by completing the Human Subjects Protection Program.
- MD (or equivalent) or PhD in Psychology, Social Work, or related field preferred. Must have experience providing counseling; 2 years psychotherapy experience or experience with Motivational Interviewing preferred.
