Data Scientist I

Under general direction and with considerable latitude for exercising independent initiative and judgment, the Data Scientist reports to the Associate Vice Provost for Data Insights and Institutional Research, working within a broader framework of areas that include the Center for Integrated Research Computing (CIRC) and University Information Technology (UIT). This role participates in the design and implementation of analytical solutions, leveraging machine learning and statistical techniques to extract insights from complex data sets. The Data Scientist collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to drive data-driven decision-making and deliver impactful results.


  1. Leverages data virtualization to build and maintain automated reporting solutions, enabling seamless access, integration, and transformation of data from multiple sources, including independent databases, the university data warehouse, and external data sources.

  2. Actively engages with stakeholders, including subject matter experts and cross-functional teams, to develop a deep understanding of their specific needs, challenges, and desired outcomes. Translates these business requirements into well-defined analytical problems, leveraging domain knowledge and expertise in data science techniques.

  3. Designs and implements interactive data visualizations and dashboards that integrate and present scholarly productivity metrics from diverse data sources, enabling data-driven insights and decision-making to drive progress across various initiatives aligned with the university's overarching strategic objectives.

  4. Working with UIT, explores novel methods of collecting data and optimizes existing data engineering pipelines.

  5. Conducts ad hoc analyses that address critical business questions. Provides recommendations to support these analyses with automation when appropriate.

  6. Mentors and guides ODI project assistants to provide a representation of practical applications within the discipline, including training and orientation, project guidance, and encouragement to think critically.

Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Math, Information Science or related field required;

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • 1 year of relevant experience required;

  • Experience working in a higher education setting preferred;

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience required;

  • Experience with Big Query preferred;

  • Strong foundational experience in statistical concepts and methodologies, including regression analysis, time series analysis, multivariate analysis, and experimental design required.

  • Experience working with Python or R including report production and data visualization using Shiny/Quarto required.

  • Experience in the Posit production environment preferred.

  • Ability to independently learn new statistical and computational methods required.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex statistical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • A consultative skillset including the ability to cultivate productive relationships with individuals and departments across the university required.

  • Ability to employ strong active listening skills and ask probing questions to thoroughly comprehend the underlying business problems, objectives, and constraints required.

  • Strong attention to detail, ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems and strong critical thinking skills required.

  • Strong analytic, qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills, with demonstrated ability to break down complex problems into phased deliverables required.

  • Ability to work independently and successfully complete assigned tasks on time with limited oversight required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 59,197 - $ 82,888 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
