Responsibilities

Population Served:

Any URMC Deaf Professional including learners, trainees, faculty, staff, and affiliates

General Responsibilities

The Deaf-Professional Interpreter provides interpreting services for Deaf Professionals affiliated with the University of Rochester Medical Center. There is the opportunity to accept URMC patient-care interpreting work and on-call work, but this is not required.

When assignments cancel, the interpreter is expected to notify the Manager of Deaf-Professional Interpreting Services and/or the Deaf-Professional Schedulers of their availability and to accept substitute work accordingly using professional discretion.

Specific Responsibilities

Performs interpreting duties. 85%

  • Fulfills the interpreting needs of Deaf Professionals and provides corresponding availability whenever possible

  • Prepares for and interprets all assignments in a timely and professional manner in accordance with hospital policy

    Completes all paperwork and administrative duties. 10%

  • Informs Deaf-Professional Schedulers about assignment changes

  • Attends staff meetings and supervision sessions when available

  • Updates professional development transcript

  • Serves as a liaison between the Deaf Professional and the Deaf-Professional Schedulers by maintaining the Deaf Professional’s interpreting calendar when applicable

  • Completes eRecord at the end of each patient interaction as applicable for added patient-care interpreting

  • Completes daily and on-call logs as applicable for added patient-care interpreting

  • Completes other paperwork as necessary

Completes scheduled training and other required staff activities including: 5%

  • Yearly mandatory online training

  • Yearly health updates

  • Yearly professional development

  • Other training and activities as assigned

Supervision, Accountability, and Evaluation

Supervision

  • The Deaf-Professional Interpreter is supervised by the Manager of Deaf- Professional Interpreting Services.

Accountability

  • The Deaf-Professional Interpreter is accountable to the Manager of Deaf-Professional Interpreting Services for implementation of the job responsibilities set forth in this job description, adherence to hospital and Social Work and Patient & Family Services policies, procedures and standards of interpreter conduct, and for adherence to the RID Code of Professional Conduct.

  • The Deaf-Professional Interpreter notifies their supervisor and/or the Deaf - Professional Schedulers if commitment to scheduled work cannot be fulfilled.

Evaluation

  • An evaluation is conducted at the end of the first six months of employment and annually thereafter by the Manager of Deaf-Professional Interpreting Services. Input is sought from those that the interpreter works closely with including Deaf Professionals, teamers, hearing consumers, and leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current RID Certification

Preferred Qualifications

A combination of the below qualifications including but not limited to:

  • Experience interpreting in a health care or clinical setting

  • Experience interpreting STEM topics

  • Experience interpreting for and a recommendation from at least one of the current URMC Deaf Professionals

  • Adherence to the RID Code of Professional Conduct
