Responsibilities

General Purpose:

Participates in the daily operations at Eastman Dental at Highland. Assists and anticipates the needs of all providers with the provision of patient care and maintains the clinic environment. Provides expanded functions per Article 133 of the NYS Education Law under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist.

Responsibilities:

  • Works as a team with faculty, residents and support staff.

  • Anticipates instruments, supplies, or equipment needs during procedures

  • Utilizes 4-handed dentistry:

  • Work as a team with the dentist and other dental assistants.

  • Pass and receive instruments.

  • With the left hand, pick up and pass the next instrument in a "ready" position using several grasps.

  • The right hand is used for grasping the patient's cheek or tongue.

  • Operates the oral evacuating equipment.

  • Applies water and air to the field of operation as needed.

  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments, runs spore tests and log results. Cleans and maintains equipment, autoclave, chairs, cabinets, traps, suctions and floors.

  • Performs expanded functions.

  • Place and remove rubber dams.

  • Select and pre-fit provisional crowns.

  • Make temporary crowns.

  • Take impressions.

  • Pour models.

  • Lab work.

  • Remove sutures.

  • Document vital signs.

  • Participates in routine operations of the clinic including but not limited to:

  • Take digital X-rays and document exposures.

  • Review inventory of all clinic supplies on a weekly basis.

  • Provide support in the ordering process.

  • Stock all chair side cabinets.

  • Clean and maintains traps, suction, lights, cabinets, dental chair, etc.

  • Prepare and label lab cases for patients in process.

  • Keep proper logs as mandated by EIOH.

  • Comply with infection-control policies and procedures as mandated by NYSDOH and UR.

    Qualifications:

    Requires high school diploma or equivalent, graduate of accredited Dental Assistant program, three years experience as dental assistant, one year dental assistant in Strong Memorial Hospital. New York State Certified & Licensed Dental Assistant. Prefer 1-3 years dental assisting experience. CPR Certified.
