Director of Equity and Inclusion

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Director of Equity and Inclusion will provide expertise and vision to embrace and support diversity, equity and inclusion in all forms at Simon Business School, with a particular emphasis on supporting and enhancing the student experience. The Director will promote and foster an inclusive environment for faculty, staff and students, while championing organizational change.

We are working to create an organizational culture that sets clear expectations, holds everyone responsible for diversity, equity, and inclusion, and provides appropriate support for students, faculty and staff at all levels of the organization. The role requires an ability to help drive institutional change, create more diverse curricular and co-curricular experiences, embrace a diverse student body, and foster a more equitable and inclusive educational and workplace environment. The role will represent the Simon Business School in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts internally and externally, within the University of Rochester and with external partnerships. The Director will work in close collaboration with the Vice President for Equity and Inclusion and the Office of Equity and Inclusion to align Simon’s student activities and plans with the Office of Equity and Inclusion’s EDI strategic plan.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

30% School Wide EDI Strategic Planning and Oversight

  • Partner with School leadership on EDI initiatives, including managing and tracking progress of the Simon EDI Action Plan in coordination with the Simon School strategic plan

  • Consultative support to Senior Associate Dean of Faculty and Assistant Dean of Administration on diversity hiring and retention tactics and strategies

  • Consultative support to Senior Associate Dean of Faculty and Assistant Dean of Administration on annual EDI training plan for faculty and staff

  • Consultative support to Senior Associate Dean of Faculty, Assistant Dean of Administration and Faculty directors on EDI focused content in curriculum and inclusive best practices in classroom

40% Student Life: Individual, Orientation, and Programming Support

  • Supervise Assistant Director of Equity and Inclusion

  • On an escalated basis, support students in crisis working in close collaboration with Admissions, Office of Student Engagement, Experiential Learning, and Benet Career Management Center colleagues as a member of the MBA Working Group Team.

  • Provide direct support to Consortium for Graduate Study in Management (CGSM) Liaisons and student body. Build partnership with this organization, as appropriate.

  • Create content and provide consultation for EDI orientation programming and goals for all Simon degree programs.

  • Consult on content and speakers for School wide EDI events such as Simon Diversity and Women’s Conference.

  • Attend Diversity career conferences in support of the student body, such as CGSM, Forte, ROMBA, MBA Veterans, Prospanica, and National Black MBA.

30% School and University Partnerships

  • Partner with Simon Leadership, faculty and staff on the development and implementation of best practices in the recruitment, hiring, promotion and retention of faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds.

  • Serve as a resource to faculty and staff seeking advice on matters related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Serve as a resource to academic deans and the faculty to promote inclusive pedagogy and classroom environments.

  • Serve as a University of Rochester Staff Equity Officer for the next two years under the leadership of the Office for Equity and Inclusion.

  • Co-manage Simon EDI alumni board, working closely with key partners at Simon.

  • Represent Simon on University of Rochester committees and work on cross-campus initiatives and programs, including but not limited to, the University Diversity and Equity Council, UR Diversity Conference planning, ad hoc committees, community support initiatives, and other training programs in support of the InstitutionalOffice for Equity and Inclusion.

  • Partner with Simon Marketing on EDI website presence, and other marketing efforts, as appropriate.

  • Represent Simon at regional and national conferences for professional development, education, and networking such as AACSB D&I Summits, GMAC, GME, ILA, NADOHE, etc. as a presenter or attendee.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree and 10+ years of experience in higher education experience required.

  • 5+ years of relevant management and subject matter experience in the diversity, equity and inclusion space, with particular focus on driving inclusive behaviors.

  • Demonstrated awareness and understanding of multiple facets of diversity, including cultural, ethnic, racial, religious, gender, educational, age, sexual orientation, linguistic, professional, and other differences that make us unique.

  • Demonstrated ability to research, identify and collaboratively implement best practices related to diversity, equity and inclusion.

  • Demonstrated cross-cultural competencies, including strong emotional intelligence and the ability to engage and build relationships with underrepresented individuals and groups.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross functional teams.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are required.

  • Ability to operate independently to achieve tasks required.

  • Occasional travel, along with availability to staff events and triage emergencies during weekend and evening hours required to support program needs.
