Rochester, NY

Responsibilities

Faculty job description:

Division of Transitional Care Medicine: Division Director

The Departments of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center are seeking a board-certified Internal Medicine-Pediatrics or Internal Medicine physician to join the Department as an Associate Professor or Full Professor in the role of Division Director. The Division of Transitional Care Medicine encompasses delivery of clinical services, clinical teaching and scholarly activity in the care of youth and adults with chronic conditions that originate in childhood.

The Division offers numerous opportunities for clinical and health system research, regional engagement in health system reform, and teaching opportunities. The division director is responsible for the overall direction and success of the division in all Departmental and missions across pediatric and adult hospitals in the health system: clinical service, education, research, faculty development, and community engagement. Division directors are expected to foster a culture of collegiality, respect, and collaboration which recognizes diversity and inclusion as a driver of our institutional excellence. We seek individuals with a successful track record of strong leadership skills, broad academic experience in research and education, and outstanding clinical service. Preference will be given to candidates with an established track record of peer-reviewed research and extramural funding.

Clinical care is provided in the outpatient setting at the Complex Care Center, an innovative interdisciplinary primary care setting targeting adults with pediatric onset conditions. Services at the center include primary care, intensive behavioral therapy through ABA, behavioral health, nutrition, respiratory therapy, behavioral health, pharmacy consult, physical therapy, care management, and dental services. Inpatient care settings include adult inpatient medical care at Highland Hospital and intensive behavioral therapy at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong. Inpatient consultation is also delivered at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Educational activities of the Division include sponsorship of one fellow per year as well as rotations for other subspecialty fellows (pulmonology, adolescent medicine). Residency activities include a required rotation for internal medicine-pediatric residents and electives for other residents and students.

Expectations of Division Director

Responsible for the overall direction and success of the division in all Departmental and GCH missions: clinical service, education, research, faculty development, and community engagement, equity and inclusion. Division directors are expected to foster a culture of collegiality, respect, and collaboration at every level of divisional function, including among faculty, staff, trainees, patients, and families. Division directors are expected to model our mission and vision of helping every patient thrive.

Clinical Service

  • Develop and maintain a collaborative multidisciplinary team for the delivery of high-quality ambulatory and/or inpatient medical care. Ensure that this team embodies a culture of safety in which communication is timely, multidirectional, and professional.

  • Assess the quality of the medical care delivered by the division as measured by specialty specific, nationally recognized benchmarks.

  • Ensure that the division engages in continuous quality improvement efforts and clinical innovations to improve the delivery of care.

  • Ensure the clinical activities of the division are successful in meeting or surpassing enterprise requirements in terms of access to medical care, communication with referring physicians, and billing and documentation requirements.

Education

  • Responsible for the overall activities of the division’s educational roles in the medical school, residency programs, and fellowships. This includes working with educational leadership in these programs to develop appropriate educational curricular, allocate sufficient faculty effort, establish effective teaching practices, and measure the effectiveness of the division’s teaching activities.

  • For those divisions that have a fellowship program, the director should collaborate with the division fellowship director to develop mechanisms that are successful in recruiting and developing high quality and diverse fellows, maintain requirements for ongoing accreditation, and also participate in efforts to seek funding to support the research and scholarly activities of its fellow trainees. Division directors should work to identify highly successful fellows who contribute to our missions of equity, inclusion, and clinical excellence in order to retain these fellows as faculty within their division as appropriate.

Research

  • The division director is responsible for overseeing and developing the research activities of the division, including research activities with historically underrepresented patient populations and those that focus on health equity.

  • The director should provide guidance for faculty in terms of successful competition for extramural research funding.

  • The division director should regularly assess the quality of non-grant funded research and scholarly activities of the division’s faculty members and set goals with an action plan.

  • The director should work closely with departmental leadership to identify sources of support and develop contingency plans in order to sustain the division’s research activities.

Faculty Development

  • The division director should play a key role in helping faculty members discern career development opportunities and plans. While this should be provided for all faculty members, it is critically important for Junior faculty as they develop professional identities. The division chief/director should champion junior faculty participation in the Pediatric Mentorship Program, including helping faculty identify mentors and prioritize twice yearly mentorship committee meetings. This needs to be effectively documented and transmitted in an appropriate time-frame to the promotions committee and faculty affairs.

  • The director should ensure that faculty maintain board certification in the specialty, licensure, and meet institutional requirements for continuing medical education.

  • The director should create transparent, individualized faculty job descriptions with consistently applied FTE-based metrics for clinical productivity expectations based on the compensation plan and in discussion with the finance and administrative team. The director is responsible for helping individual faculty balance their total effort towards the institutional missions of clinical care, education, academic scholarship, and equity and inclusion.

  • At least once a year the division director must meet individually with each faculty member to provide meaningful evaluation and feedback on their performance on the specific tasks identified in that year’s plan. This should be documented in their annual review. The chief/director should evaluate the faculty member’s progress and request approval from the Chair to initiate the promotions process when appropriate.

Administrative

  • The division director is responsible for creating and maintaining an efficient, effective support staff for the division, and ensuring collegiality and collaboration at all levels of the division including administrators and staff. With their division administrator and feedback from division members, directors should identify administrative gaps and opportunities for improvement.

  • The director should meet approximately weekly with the division administrator to review progress of the division members, review finances, and identify issues that need to be addressed.

  • The division director is responsible for the efficient and cost-effective use of ambulatory and/or inpatient resources, and should measure performance routinely against institutional metrics and national benchmarks.

  • The division director should play an important role in the prospective development of annual division budgets, and take responsibility for achieving financial targets by working with the division administrator to monitor financial performance on a regular basis.

  • The division director is responsible for overseeing strategic, transparent, centralized faculty recruitment with a focus on recruitment and retention of high quality, diverse faculty.

  • The division director is responsible for fostering and sustaining a culture of leadership transparency, collegial and respectful communication including routine meetings with collaborative agendas set by members of the faculty, trainees, and staff.

  • The division director should provide support letters, as needed, for re-appointments, promotions, grant submissions, and other opportunities for faculty members in the division. The division director should ensure that faculty members are aware of their individual timelines for reappointment and promotion.

Community Engagement

  • The division director should represent the division and the Department of pediatrics favorably in the community, and ensure that the division appropriately engages its constituents in the local, regional and national community.

  • The division director should have the opportunity to work appropriately with the department and University to engage in philanthropic outreach to support the work of the division, the Department and the University.

Diversity/Inclusion/Culture

Each division director is responsible for ensuring the division participates annually towards continuous diversity quality improvement. This process will include establishing plans to achieve and sustain these goals for the long-term for the purposes of enhancing departmental diversity and inclusion, and engaging patients and families in improvement efforts with support from the Director of Family and Community Outreach. The Vice Chair for Diversity and Culture Development and our Director of Departmental and Divisional QI will assist division directors as needed in setting goals, establishing metrics, and providing resources for achieving and sustaining these goals.
