Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Performs diverse technical assignments that require theoretical insight, complex skill, judgement, and the knowledge of the principle and methods of Histotechnology. Prepares and performs testing procedures on pathology specimens that results in the creation of microscopic slides for histological analysis by a pathologist. These technical procedures may include but are not limited to grossing, processing and embedding specimens, and micro techniques on both frozen and paraffin tissues. Technical staining procedures include: routine Hematoxylin and Eosin, special stains, and Immunohistochemical staining. Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with faculty and staff at all levels of the organization. Assignments may include on-call rotations, including weekends and holidays.

Supervision and direction:

Under the general direction of the Surgical Pathology Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor and Chief Supervisor.

Instruments and equipment typically used:

Microtomes, stainers, tissue processors, embedding centers, automatic cover slipper, microscopes, chemical reagents, dyes, glassware, measuring devises, computer equipment and other equipment of similar scope and complexity.

Job duties and responsibilities:

  • Processes specimens for histological examination which may include grossing, embedding, microtomy and routine staining. 40%

  • Processes special stains and Immunohistochemical slides for microscopic analysis. Prepares slides for ancillary testing. 35%

  • Performs routine maintenance of histology instrumentation. 5%

  • Monitors inventory at work stations and requests supplies needed. 5%

  • May coordinates laboratory research projects. 5%

  • Resolves discrepancies with minimal oversight and seeks help as needed. 5%

  • Performs other related duties and training as assigned. 5%

Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies including CAP.

Adheres to all safety policies and procedures.

Assures accurate specimen labeling and maintains the integrity of specimen records through approved identification procedures.

Maintains procedures and records in accordance with regulatory standards.

Qualifications:

The individual must be proficient in all aspects of histology laboratory practice.

Education:

NYS licensed (or eligible) as a Clinical Histology Technician or Clinical Medical Technologist.

NYS licensed Clinical Medical Technician with at least 1 year experience in a Histology laboratory.

Salary negotiable upon licensure and experience.

Associate’s degree in Histology or related field and New York State license (or license eligibility) as a Clinical Histology Technician or Clinical Medical Technologist required. One year of Histotechnologist experience or Bachelor’s degree in Histology or related discipline preferred.
