Hospital Medicine - Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant
FT position available, 10 hour shifts, weekends and holidays per unit policy
The APP for this service will be responsible for:
Performing and independently performing the following inpatient bedside procedures:
Central line insertion
Dialysis/Apheresis catheter insertion
Ultrasound guided peripheral IVs
Learning/understanding indications/contraindations to each procedure
Ensure specimen delivery to appropriate labs when necessary
Performing select procedures under direct supervision of procedural hospitalist and/or intensivist
Coordinate with referring in house services for scheduling of these procedures in cooperation with senior medicine resident
Once comfortable with procedures, supervising resident physicians who are learning procedures
Perform appropriate follow up as needed post procedurally, as well as monitor for complications during the post procedure period.
Prior procedural experience is not required, though APPs must be motivated to learn and become experts in the procedures. APPs will learn each of the bedside procedures alongside the procedural hospitalist and be integrated as a member of the hospitalist (or intensivist)/resident/APP procedure team. At times the APP will perform and bill for procedure independently, while other times they will assist the procedural attending in performing the procedures. Once comfortable, APPs may be responsible for teaching procedures to residents that are rotating on the service. Ultrasound will be a required component of all procedures except lumbar punctures. APPs with and without prior experience will be taught to use and interpret ultrasound for procedural guidance.
Requires a Master's Degree in Nursing or related field and an active New York State license in good standing. Applicants will have 5 years experience as an RN with one to three years of leadership experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. The Nurse Practitioner influences the quality and delivery of care in various roles including consultant, researcher, mentor, and practitioner. This role may be unit, program, or service based and is involved in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Completion of an AMA approved Physician Assistant program, licensure in good standing, and certified as a Registered Physician Assistant. Demonstrated clinical competence, superior verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal effectiveness and customer relation skills, computer competence and must have an active desire to learn. This role may be unit, program, or service based and is involved in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
