Responsibilities

MAIN PURPOSE:

Coordinates all activities related to the prevention and control of health care associated infections (HAis), helps develop standards of care which reduce risk of HAis among patients and personnel, serves as consultant, educator, researcher and proponent of change in order to provide quality health care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

With latitude for independent action and under the general direction of the Manager or Director of Infection Prevention:

Serves as a working member of the Infection Prevention Committee, responsible for coordinating, implementing and evaluating the standards of patient care developed by the Committee.

Teaches infection prevention theory and procedures to hospital personnel. Supervises and conducts on-going surveillance of HAis in patients and personnel. Compiles and interprets surveillance data on infection.

Identifies epidemiological variations in levels of disease and develops appropriate measures for prevention and control.

Directs and coordinates initiatives designed to identify, evaluate and implement infection prevention practice which improves patient care.

Monitors patient care activities to identify methods, techniques, equipment and products which impact transmission of infection.

Directs and coordinates all levels of employees in any department as it is necessary in relation to isolation, detection of evidence of cross infection, control measures, etc. Influences change through membership and participation in a variety of committees and groups.

Performs surveillance of health care associated infections and enters the data into NHSN.

Develops and participates in In-Service Education Programs; reviews and disseminates current infection prevention information to appropriate individuals or departments within the hospital. Collaborates with all disciplines and departments in the hospital to incorporate infection prevention principles in policies and procedures in order to provide a safe environment for hospital patients and personnel.

Ensures reporting of infections and/or communicable diseases to the appropriate public health authority. Continues self-education by reviewing current literature, attending workshops, seminars and formal courses.

AUTHORITY:

Self-directed with general direction from Director Infection Prevention.

REQUIREMENTS:

A current registered nursing license and Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science; a minimum of 2 years of nursing practice or equivalent health care experience; previous experience in Infection Prevention and Certification in Infection Prevention are highly desirable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
