Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Performs a variety of horticultural and snow removal duties of a routine and highly professional nature and demonstrates all around knowledge, experience, and skill above that of a horticulturist. Performs all associated tasks for plants, lawn care, insect control, greenhouse/nursery operations, with ability to identify and treat pests with appropriate certification and licenses. Includes manual tasks connected with the work and the operation of powered equipment, vehicles and tools in addition to acting in capacity of trouble shooter and specialist. Performs more generalized groundskeeping duties as needed and is responsible for the quantity and quality of the work of others in the group. Must be willing to work long irregular hours, including nights and weekends, when required. Must be available for call-in duty. May require seasonal shift change.

Essential Tasks:

  • Effectively guides horticulturist work group in managing plant, flower and tree beds according to recommended horticultural techniques or landscape plans: plants, transplants, propagates, removes, cultivates, aerates, mulches and waters. Seeds and overseeds lawn areas. Spring and fall clean-up.

  • Effectively guides snow removal - Sets snow fences, plows and brooms snow, shovels and salts all areas including sidewalks, parking lots, stairs, roadways, etc.

  • Primary trouble shooter in identifying insects and diseases. Provides insect and weed control through application of pesticides, and injections.Fertilizes plant life at proper times of year.Uses appropriate methods, materials, equipment and personal protection for both inside and outside plantings.

  • Prioritizes pruning and trimming of trees and shrubs according to ANSI standards utilizing latest techniques, under the direction of the Manager of Horticulture and Grounds. May require operation of bucket truck or climbing, with necessary PPE. May assist with mowing, trimming and blowing of lawn areas.

  • Specialistin preparing beds and managing nursery - Prepares soil beds for seeding and planting as required for interior and exterior areas. Performs required aspects of greenhouse operations and maintenance, nursery operations and interior plantings.

  • Irrigation - Maintains and operates irrigating systems as required.

  • Trash removal – Empty trash cans, cigarette butt containers, recycling containers. Picks up ground trash. Sweeps garage, roadways, building entrances.

  • Makes recommendations to Horticulture and Grounds leadership in developing new programs for area landscaping. Under the direction of the Supervisor, may instruct Horticultural Assistants, students and lower classified staff in the care of plants, trees, lawns and shrubs, etc.Will be expected to work independently on assigned projects with assistance from lower classified staff.

  • Complies with safety regulations of the University and of local, state and federal agencies, as well as departmental policies and procedures. Keeps records and makes reports of daily work. Maintains cleanliness of work area and insures that tools and equipment are kept in good working order.

  • Performs other duties requiring comparable skill and responsibility as directed.

Education/Experience : Associates degree in Horticulture or 5 years practical related experience; or equivalent combination. Requires a valid NYS Class D motor vehicle operators license and physical ability and stamina suited to heavy and sustained manual labor and continuous exposure to local weather conditions. Must possess NYS Pesticide Applicator License.

License/Certification Required : Clean valid New York State Class D motor vehicle operator license. NYS Pesticide applicators license -3A, and may require Commercial Drivers License.
