Department Chair, Faculty member, Administrator, or head of a laboratory or research project


Provides direct research and teaching support at the senior professional level by taking charge of small, complex research projects or by directly participating in a major aspect of a larger research project; and provides guidance to or directly supervises technicians, laboratory aides and professional staff.


With broad guidance as to research project objectives, is in charge of laboratory operations in support of small, complex research projects or in major aspects of larger research projects; or works independently in a phase of research of a complex project. Responsibilities include most or all of the following, as well as other related duties:

20% Collaborates with investigators in scientific writing, which may include: manuscripts, research proposals as well as animal use protocols (UCAR). Prepares written reports on all phases of laboratory work involved in research projects, which become an integral part of the principal project report or are used in the publication of articles. Assists in the final writing of research publications.

20% Independently conducts scientific experiments with responsibility for developing critical research data. Designs or collaborates in designing sophisticated research protocols. Evaluates the performance of research protocols, making design changes, or developing new approaches for its use.

15% Develops, refines and optimizes standard laboratory assays including electrophysiology experiments, mouse Catwalk™ analysis, and assessment of peripheral nerve recovery. Adapts new techniques for the laboratory as needed.

10% Analyzes and evaluates experimental data and interprets results within the scope of the study; assesses the relevance to ongoing laboratory science.

10% Assists in management and care of animal (mouse) colonies

10% Teaches laboratory techniques and procedures to graduate students, research faculty, and professional laboratory support staff. Works with lab personnel to trouble shoot experiments.

5% Ensures safe work environment in accordance with University policy and local regulations.

5% Completes initiation of orders and services for the general maintenance of the laboratory and the equipment and space within.

5% Keeps abreast of trends in field of transplant and peripheral nerve research by studying current research literature, abstracting scientific articles, and participating in meetings, institutes, and seminars.

Other duties as assigned.


Master's degree with major course work in the field of assignment. With a Master's Degree, a minimum 3 years of professional experience in the field of assignment. With the equivalent of a Master's Degree in experience, training and education, 5 years in the field of assignment with some independent research experience; or an equivalent combination of experience, training and education.
