ResponsibilitiesTYPICAL DUTIES:
A full-time Laboratory Research Technician III (higher level or part time is negotiable) position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Xin Li, Associate Professor at the University of Rochester Center for RNA Biology, Genome to Therapeutics, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics and Department of Urology, NIEHS Environmental Health Sciences Center, Goergen Institute for Data Science, and Department of Biology . Li lab works on the epigenetic regulation of sperm production and fertility. This 6-year-old lab looks for a reliable person who is passionate about science but understands the necessary groundwork required to keep a bustling lab afloat. This position will be assisting with daily operations of a research lab (around 4-5 persons) and maintaining mouse colonies and basic bench work. When necessary, this position will provide support to other members of the lab including researchers, staff and students. This person shall have the opportunity to participate in research projects and learn latest sequencing techniques and bioinformatics.
SUPERVISION:
This position reports to Xin Li, Ph.D. After a period of initial guidance and training, this position requires that the individual be able to execute experiments
PART I. TASK LIST
Task Percent of time
Plans and performs a variety of moderately-complex laboratory tests, analyses and observations which may require nonstandard procedures and complex instrumentation. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and makes simple repairs and general laboratory management. 25%
Organizes and keeps systematic backups of deep sequencing libraries, implements data analysis pipelines, generates figures and perform statistic test using R (training provided); 25%
Performs molecular biological techniques, including: cloning, microscopy, IHC, IF, western blotting, PCR real time qRT-PCR and constructing deep sequencing library (training provided); 20%
General lab management: Ensures timely and accurate input of order, chemicals, plasmids, antibodies, oligos and mice into databases. Orders and maintains lab inventory of supplies, chemicals, equipment and instrumentation and may distribute intra-departmental charges. Autoclaves glassware, pipets, and miscellaneous laboratory supplies. Prepares and labels buffers, media solutions, and reagents and other solutions. Manages lab budget and inventory including purchasing of supplies and services ensuring that they are necessary, reasonable and project related. Negotiates with vendors, obtain quotes and arranges for demos of large equipment. Maintains general lab cleanliness; 10%
General Laboratory Safety: Ensures research regulation are adhered to IACUC approvals in place, material transfer agreements properly executed, and that radiation and lab safety requirements are up-to-date and implemented; Maintains laboratory equipment and certification to pass annual inspection and safety standards. 10%
Orients and trains new lab members: any new rotating/permanent graduate students, as well as new post-doctoral candidates and visiting scientists requiring training in laboratory methods and procedures. 5%
Performs other job-related duties as required. 5%
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate’s degree in appropriate discipline plus 2 to 3 years specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum qualifications as defined above.
Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry and some experience in r elated field, or equivalent education and experience .
Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
Proficient in the Unix/Linux computing environment and an excellent knowledge of Bash Scripting; Python
Familiar with R packages
Excellent organizational skills, writing, interpersonal and communication skills
Good work ethic and attention to detail
