Laboratory Engineer

The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) of the University of Rochester is a unique national resource for research and education in science and technology. LLE was established in 1970 as a center for the investigation of the interaction of intense radiation with matter.

The Facility Operations Division is seeking a Laboratory Engineer to assist in preparation and support of experiments for the OMEGA laser system. A successful candidate will be challenged by the wide range of technologies used to conduct these experiments.


  • Work with Principal Investigators (PIs) throughout the campaign development process in order to plan successful and efficient experiments

  • Ensure system safety is maintained

  • Participate in the development of and provide support for a wide range of equipment and instrumentation

  • Participate in experiments as a member of the Omega field operations crew

  • Write procedures and other documentation

  • Shift flexibility is required (Morning and Evening shifts)


  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics field

  • Ability to obtain a security clearance


  • Working knowledge of linear algebra, advanced geometry, single variable calculus and data analysis methods

  • Well versed in engineering fundamentals including basic mechanics and technical drawing

  • Proficient in technical writing

  • Proficient in CAD

  • Proficient using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • The ability to perform physically demanding tasks in a Class 100 cleanroom environment, including lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • High degree of manual dexterity

  • Strong interpersonal skills


  • Ability to program (MATLAB, Python, VBA or other similar language)

Pay Range

Pay Range: $58,800 - $82,300 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
