Position Summary:

Performs research laboratory assignments, various and diversified in nature, in accordance with standard practices and procedures. This position requires animal colony management necessitating scheduling of breeding animals for sufficient numbers for experiments. The individual will help plan experiments and perform said experiments maintaining all necessary records for publication. As needed, the individual will also assist in data collection for grant applications.


Responsibilities include most or all of the following, as well as other related duties:

Data Collection: Electrophysiology recordings/imaging of Mouse in head fixed awake behaving olfaction experiments.

Data Collection: Prepares tissue for histological analysis and perform anatomy and imaging of sections.

Data Collection: Schedules and performs open field electrophysiology/imaging experiments.

Demonstrates good record keeping ability. Collects data as described below and prepares graphics and reports for Principal Investigator (PI).

Data Collection: Dissection and tissue isolation. Demonstrates basic immunohistochemistry skills.

Prepares various buffers, solutions, or antibodies for lab use. Cleans and performs routine maintenance on equipment. Demonstrates ability to follow detailed instructions given by lab manager.

Manages day-to-day elements of animal colony maintenance. Communicates details of animal colony status to PI or lab manager.

Participates in experimental design through discussion with PI. Presents results of experiments internally and externally. Attends journal club and lab meetings.


  • Associate’s degree in appropriate discipline; or combination of education and experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years’ experience in a laboratory setting preferred.

  • Ability to perform molecular and histological techniques under supervision.

  • Attention to detail from established protocols or lab manager’s instructions.

  • Attention to all safety issues in the lab.

  • Ability to handle small lab animals (mice).

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with other laboratory personnel.

  • Ability to perform electrophysiology and recording/imaging experiments initially with the supervisor’s guidance and then independently.
