A full-time Laboratory Research Technician Ill (part time is negotiable) position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Xin Li, Associate Professor at the University of Rochester Center for RNA Biology, Genome to Therapeutics, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics and Department of Urology, NIEHS Environmental Health Sciences Center. Li lab works on the epigenetic and RNA regulation of fertility and inheritance. This 5-year-old lab looks for a reliable person who is passionate about science but understands the necessary groundwork required to keep a bustling lab afloat. This position will be performing biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology experiments, and assisting with daily operations of a research lab (around 4-5 persons). This person shall have the opportunity to participate in research projects and learn latest sequencing techniques and bioinformatics.
Plans and performs a variety of moderately-complex laboratory tests, analyses and observations which may require nonstandard procedures and complex instrumentation. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and makes simple repairs and general laboratory management:
Performs molecular biological techniques, including: cloning, PCR real time qRT-PCR and constructing deep sequencing library (training provided);
Performs biochemistry techniques, including: RNA purification, protein purification, western blotting, radioactive labelling, immunoprecipitation;
Perform sucrose gradient ultracentrifuge fractionate as part of the ribosome profiling library construction experiments. Requires long hours (each experiment takes 1-2 hours to set up, 3 hours centrifuging (waiting time), 3 hours fraction collection, and 1-2 hours of washing, and may require second washing on the next day, clean and dissemble of the fractionation machinery.
Performs cell biology biological techniques, including: microscopy, squash staining, IHC, IF, sperm purification, mouse dissection;
General lab management: Ensures timely and accurate input of order, chemicals, plasmids, antibodies, oligos and mice into databases. Orders and maintains lab inventory of supplies, chemicals, equipment and instrumentation and may distribute intra-departmental charges. Autoclaves glassware, pipets, and miscellaneous laboratory supplies. Prepare and label buffers, media solutions, and reagents and other solutions. Manages lab budget and inventory including purchasing of supplies and services ensuring that they are necessary, reasonable and project related. Negotiates with vendors, obtain quotes and arranges for demos of large equipment. Maintain general lab cleanliness;
General Laboratory Safety: Ensures radiation and lab safety requirements are up-to-date and implemented; Maintains laboratory equipment and certification to pass annual inspection and safety standards.
Orients and trains new lab members: any new rotating/permanent graduate students, as well as new post-doctoral candidates and visiting scientists requiring training in laboratory methods and procedures.
Performs other job related duties as required.
Associate's degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Bachelor degree in biochemistry or molecular biology chemistry and some experience in related field, or equivalent education and experience.
Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
Good working ethics.
Must be willing to work with mice.
