Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

Support to Dr. Kottmann in a research project investigating pathogenetic mechanisms and therapeutic interventions in lung fibrosis. The project will involve the longitudinal collection of human samples and the testing novel therapeutics to prevent fibrosis.

Supervision and Direction Received:

Under direction of Dr. Kottmann or laboratory director.

Machines and Equipment Used:

Centrifuge, microscope, and associated camera and software, tissue culture hood, sonicator, microplate ELISA reader, computer, ELISA, DNA isolation kits, gel electrophoresis apparatus, power packs, incubators, balances, and pH meters.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  1. Processing of human samples including blood, urine, breath condensate, and lung tissue for the UR-ILD biorepository. 25%

  2. Overseeing mice used in the lab including routine and non-routine breeding colonies, surgeries, tissue collection and other experiments as needed. This will involve performing specialized procedures on mice, and maintaining records, data collection, and analysis. 25%

  3. Develops and maintains laboratory protocols, including computer files on these. Prepares lab reagents and autoclave materials. Responsible for maintaining and filing material safety data sheets and maintaining animal inventory. Computes and analyzes test data, prepares test reports, posters and manuscripts, and makes recommendations. 25%

  4. Exercises independent technical judgment, performing a variety of complex laboratory measurements, analyses and observation utilizing biological samples. This includes computerized data collection, ELISA kits, tissue, immunohistochemistry, and cell culture including transfection. 10%

  5. Interprets assignments/problems and selects approaches.

  6. Instructs fellows, students, and trainees in the methods and techniques used in the laboratory. 5%

  7. Performs literature searches. Proofread manuscripts in preparation. Operates Photocopier, prepares forms and labels. 5%

    QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, License or Certificates):

    Associate's degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
