This position will perform multiple duties in support of neuroscience research. Performs research laboratory assignments, various and diversified in nature, in accordance with standard practices and procedures. This position requires understanding of small animal husbandry in a basic science laboratory.

Typical Duties:

  • General laboratory management including preparation of various buffers, solutions, or antibodies for lab use as well as purifying RNA and DNA (20 % effort)

  • Individual must have an understanding of basic small animal husbandry inclusive of weaning, tissue collection, euthanasia, genotyping, etc. (10% effort)

  • Harvests tissues samples for histology and molecular biology. (15% effort)

  • Performs standard laboratory histological techniques, including immunohistochemistry on fixed tissue. (30% effort)

  • Documents all relevant laboratory activity in a lab notebook or appropriate computer system and communicates daily details of animal colony status to PI or lab manager. (20 % effort)

  • Cleaning and performing routine maintenance on lab equipment; Ensuring compliance with all UCAR and laboratory safety rules. (5 % effort)


    Associate's degree in appropriate discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, biology or related fields with some lab or animal work experience. Basic understanding of chemistry and biology. Training will be provided in laboratory skills and on how to perform care and experiments using laboratory animals. MS Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) preferred, particularly use of Excel. Must be able think independently, maintain meticulous records and have good judgment about when to seek advice from others when there is a problem. Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with other laboratory personnel.
