The candidate will act as the primary laboratory research coordinator for the faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students in the lab. The purposes of the position are to design and execute sophisticated research investigations in the field of systems neuroscience, including to manage laboratory operations, to maintain the lab within compliance of law and university policies, and to train students and staff in the use of sophisticated equipment and complex experimental protocols.

25% Independently maintains the lab equipment and the resources of the laboratory. Installs and ensures proper working order of equipment, including but not limited to electrophysiology acquisition systems, fluorescent microscopes, multiphoton imaging systems, animal behavior rooms, and behavior chambers; maintains computing capabilities within the lab; works with appropriate IT staff to suggest equipment and software upgrades, and maintains lab computing facilities within compliance of university security policies.
25% Acts as laboratory manager; supervises all undergraduate research assistants and staff; supervises graduate students completing rotations in the laboratory. Trains staff and students in the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment and complex experimental protocols; orients new students and staff to the lab; ensures that all lab personnel complete necessary training following EH&S guidelines; maintains stock of related consumables as well as manages lab resources. Orders supplies and equipment, maintains the order and cleanliness of the lab; troubleshoots lab equipment.
15% Under broad guidance and exercising independent technical judgment, plans and performs sophisticated experiments using optical (imaging single photon and multiphoton) and electrophysiological methods (multiunit silicone probes, patch clamp, extracellular) on rodents.
10% Collaborates on design of experiments, facilitates development and adaptation of specific experimental protocols for a number of experiment types, and maintains the documentation for future use. Runs the protocols, collects data, and monitors experiments.
10% Maintains accurate records of all subjects and experiments; prepares tables and reports for University entities and external granting agencies.
10% Provides animal colony management including accurate logging of surgical procedures, follow-up for electrophysiology and behavior, genotyping, and colony management. Candidate should have experience with mouse handling and care.
5% Contributes to preparing publications, presentation, and proposals related to laboratory research; searches literature for relevant material, drafts experimental procedures and results; keeps abreast of the field of neuroscience by reading journal articles, attending laboratory meetings, and attending relevant University seminars.
5% Other projects and job duties as assigned.
Associate’s degree in appropriate discipline, plus 4-5 years of specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience with animal research including surgical procedures, small animal monitoring, and electrophysiology methods; experience training others in the use of complex equipment; previous experience in research lab desired.
Experience with MATLAB/Python programming, soldering and electronics management, etc. preferred
Strong attention to detail, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, including written communication.
