POSITION SUMMARY: This position provides research support and participates in all major aspects of research projects within the laboratory of Dr. Steve Georas. The employee is part of a team investigating immune dysregulation in asthma and other lung diseases, and will participate in the planning and execution of complex experiments involving human cells and mouse models of asthma. Will participate in ongoing research studies with other lab members, and also oversee an independent research project. The lab technician will use existing protocols as well as develop new protocols, and will train new lab members in techniques and protocols. The technician will interact with regulatory bodies (e.g. Animal Care and Use) and other research labs in a collaborative manner. We are looking for a self-starter with excellent organization skills. Good communication and interpersonal skills are an important asset. The lab is located in the Kornberg Medical Research Building (KMRB).
SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED: Under the direction of Dr. Georas.
MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USE: Operates complex scientific equipment including flow cytometer, multiplex bead array, gel documentation system, and real time PCR machine. Operates computer for data analysis.
Plans and conducts experiments investigating the immunology of asthma using mouse models. This will involve sensitization and challenging mice with model allergens, and isolating lung cells, lavage fluids, and other tissues for analysis, in accordance with approved protocols. Directs the gathering of research materials, supplies, equipment and apparatus to perform each protocol as required including setting up and operating sophisticated equipment.
In accordance with broadly outlined objectives, performs a variety of complex laboratory measurements and has the latitude to modify methods and techniques and making recommendations as necessary. Analyzes the measurements and test data including the analysis of secreted products by ELISA or bead array, and of cellular proteins by western blot or imunohistochemistry and of RNA by RT-PCR or related techniques.
Extracts and compiles test data, prepares test reports, posters, designs charts and graphs, and assists in the preparation of manuscripts from the analysis of experimental data.
Responsible for maintaining animal inventory and ensuring compliance with ACUC protocols.
Instructs fellows, students, and trainees in the methods and techniques used in the laboratory. Supervises lower level laboratory technicians in laboratory.
Performs literature searches.5
REQUIREMENTS (Education, Experience, License or Certificates):
AAS degree in appropriate discipline plus 4-5 years specialized experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
