Responsibilities
The Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation (RBSCP), including the University Archives, is home to a rich collection of rare and unique historical materials. The Department acquires, preserves, and provides access to rare books, manuscripts, and archival collections in keeping with the strategic priorities of the University of Rochester Libraries and in support of the mission of the University of Rochester , “Learn, Discover, Heal, Create—and Make the World Ever Better.”
The Lead Collections Manager for the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation (RBSCP) provides leadership on special collection management, access, and preservation to support and extend access through the robust management of our growing collections, including the University Archives, Special Collections, Rare Books, and Medieval Manuscripts. The Lead Collections Manager manages the accessioning of new acquisitions and backlog collections and overseeing the department’s analog and digital processing and collections management. This position also supervises the Processing Archivist for Special Collections, Processing Archivist for University Archives and Local History, Stacks Manager, and student assistants and collaborates with other River Campus Libraries (RCL) departments and staff from the Sibley and Miner Libraries.
Responsibilities include:
Collection Management
Provides leadership for all collection management.
Provides leadership in the development, documentation, and implementation of workflows for accessioning and cataloging newly acquired materials, as well as manages digitization efforts and digital collections.
Collaborates with other RCL departments and staff from the Sibley and Miner Libraries
Processing Management
Provides leadership in the development, documentation, and implementation of processing standards.
Manages the accessioning and processing of physical and digital materials, including Special Collections, University Archives, Medieval Manuscripts, and Rare Book Collections.
Supervision
Supervises the Processing Archivist for Special Collections, Processing Archivist for University Archives and Local History, and RBSCP Senior Library Assistant Stacks Manager.
Supervise student assistants.
Preservation Management
- Manages the NYS Preservation Grant.
Professional Development
Maintain currency with library functions, resources, practices, and procedures in the areas of special collections management.
Participate in and contribute toward RCL and University committees, meetings, and events.
Maintain professional collaborations with RCL colleagues and other campus constituencies.
Contribute to the profession through active participation in conferences, associations, research, writing, etc.
Qualifications:
ALA accredited MLS/MLIS degree or advanced degree in a related field required
Demonstrated commitment to continued professional growth and development required
Experience or commitment to advancing diversity, inclusion, and belonging through archival practice, scholarship, and service required
Interest in and growing understanding of copyright and rights management issues required
5+ years of experience in archival accessioning and processing; writing DACS-compliant finding aids in ArchivesSpace; understanding archival standards and metadata standards, and archival best practices and preservation preferred
1+ year of management experience preferred
1+ year of collection management experience preferred
Experience in developing workflows for processing digital or born-digital collections preferred.
Demonstrated initiatives and leadership qualities required
Capable of taking on additional responsibilities and activities without sacrificing the quality or quantity of those primary job responsibilities required
Knowledge of best practices for the physical and intellectual arrangement, description, and preservation of textual, audio-visual, photographic, digitized and born-digital collection material required
Ability to work independently, to meet deadlines, as well as manage multiple projects simultaneously required
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively across an inter-departmental and institutional structure; excellent oral and written communication skills required
Interest in or background in the history of higher education, STEM, or related areas preferred
Familiarity with legal and ethical issues related to privacy and records restrictions preferred

Pay Range
Pay Range: $ 60,000 - $125,000 Annually
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
