Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE :

Oversees operations related to optimizing financial outcomes associated with medically-billed, facility-administered specialty and other high cost pharmaceuticals for Strong Memorial Hospital. Develops strategies to maximize margin and reduce costs to patients through strategic product selection, reducing bad claims and write-offs, maximizing patient assistance programs, and optimizing site of care decisions. Additional responsibilities include education and communication to other stakeholders (pharmacy, providers, nurses, patients, etc.), development and maintenance of related policies and SOPs, workflow design, and reporting financial outcomes metrics. Serves as a resource for affiliate hospitals in these areas

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES :

Develops strategies and workflow to maximize financial opportunities for the institution and reduce costs to patients for facility-administered specialty drugs.

This includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Sophisticated product selection methods that are individualized to each patient.

  • Site of care preferences and optimization.

  • Expand and standardize medication access specialist team to more broadly function across various specialties.

  • Work with patient financial services teams and health information management to minimize denied claims through proper clinical documentation and charting.

    Enhance and modernize prior authorization process to incorporate a greater understanding of institutional strategy, consistent documentation within the EMR, and managerial escalation with payers when necessary.

    Management of pharmacy department personnel associated with the following areas of the medical specialty environment:

  • Patient access

  • Prior authorization

    Other pharmacy departmental roles involving medical specialty pharmaceuticals (e.g. site of care related roles)

    Patient care activities:

  • Converting treatment plans

  • Escalation of cases needing resolution

  • Intervention on claim denials

    Communications/Education:

  • Communicates and educates providers, clinical teams, pharmacists, and staff with regard to product changes, new initiatives, workflow changes, etc.

  • Develops provider education related to financial outcomes, patient access, new products.

    Compliance/Policies:

  • Develops and maintains SOPs and policies related to medical specialty business activities.

    Other duties as assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Pharmacy required (PharmD preferred)

  • Masters (relevant management degree) or MBA preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years of health-system pharmacy experience required

  • Post-graduate-Year 1 (PGY-1) training combined with 2 years of progressive and relevant professional experience preferred.

  • Prior management experience preferred

  • Detailed understanding of health-system pharmacy revenue cycle preferred

  • Detailed understanding of the 340B program preferred

  • Fluent with Microsoft Office suite, Adobe. Able to interpret large amount of data for strategic decision making required.

  • Valid NYS Pharmacy License and interest in hospital practice.

  • Completion of ASHP Pharmacy Revenue Cycle Certificate Program
