Responsibilities

Position Summary:

With a high level of independent judgment and self-direction, establishes dynamic, collaborative networks and relationships with the faculty, clinicians, nurses, residents, researchers, staff, students, and administration of Eastman Institute of Oral Health (EIOH) and University of Rochester Medical Center. Identifies and supports the information needs through the provision of novel services and tools. Promotes awareness of library services and resources, and developments in information management that can improve education, research, and patient care. Develops and administers educational programs and instruct clientele, both formally and informally. Manage collections, budget and staff of Bibby Library (EIOH).

Our engagement-centered model embraces the concept that librarians, like all library staff, have leadership responsibilities regardless of their position within Miner Libraries. Leadership on the part of librarians includes activities such as contributing to goals and strategic library directions through active participation on committees and task forces, locally, nationally, and internationally, and sharing expertise throughout the library in order to further library and university missions.

Responsibilities:

Serve as primary library liaison to Eastman Institute of Oral Health (EIOH) and select URMC departments:

  • Establishes dynamic, collaborative networks and relationships with faculty, clinicians, nurses, residents, researchers, staff, administration and students.

  • Stays up-to-date with issues such as emerging technologies, information management, adult education, scholarly communication, the dental and hospital literature, bibliographic management, and archival management.

  • Analyzes and assesses trends in patient care, teaching and research; is aware of current and future programs; uses information to guide personal continuing education and responses to customer needs.

  • Develops and maintains a strong and effective system for communicating with customers about library resources and services. This system may include any or all of the following: face-to-face meetings, email, newsletters, web 2.0 technologies, departmental meetings, orientations, “house calls.”

  • Develops LibGuides to meet the specialized information needs of specific groups.

  • Participates in EIOH and URMC groups focused on research and education, i.e., EIOH Curriculum Committee, journal clubs, etc.

Designs and implements strategic and pedagogically appropriate instruction through a variety of methods. Takes lead in instructing EIOH and assigned URMC department residents on the principles of evidence-based practice. Encourages and supports lifelong learning in a highly complex and constantly changing information environment:

  • Develops instructional programs and learning materials in a variety of formats, using instructional design principles.

  • Delivers effective instructional sessions; and/or provides alternate learning opportunities such as LibGuides, train-the-trainer sessions, research consultations, online tutorials, or other just-in-time methods.

  • Assesses student learning in library instruction sessions; uses results to improve instruction.

  • Engages in reflective teaching through use of instructional improvement tools such as peer

  • evaluation or teaching portfolios.

  • Assists EIOH faculty in utilizing the Blackboard course management system.

  • Serves as an instructor for the Clinical Research & Information Resources sessions in Medical Evidence & Inquiry (MEI), a mandatory class for all first-year medical students.

Provides in-depth, specialized research consultation, reference services and support for publishing activities:

  • Performs complex and highly technical literature searches.

  • Participates in EIOH and assigned URMC department research projects.

  • Is familiar with issues pertaining to scholarly publishing and open access.

  • Demonstrates competency on broad issues of copyright and how to responsibly use resources in an academic setting.

Participates in the Edward G. Miner Library on-call service:

  • Assists customers in finding information in various print and electronic resources, both in-house and remote.

  • Covers the on-call shift assigned; assists other librarians with on-call shifts, as needed.

  • Provides informal, impromptu training to library customers in the use of databases and other resources provided and supported by Miner Libraries.

Oversees services and resources of Bibby Library (EIOH):

  • Develops policies, procedures, goals and objectives to meet the needs of customers. Whenever possible, ensures consistency with other Miner Libraries.

  • Evaluates library services, resources and customer satisfaction.

  • Supervises library assistant including, but not limited to: hiring, training, determining priorities, directing work and evaluating performance.

  • Develops and administers Bibby budget while working closely with Miner Libraries’ Assistant Director for Research & Clinical Information Services.

  • Acts as collection development specialist in the field of dentistry. Works with Miner Libraries’ Head Collections & Systems and Assistant Director for Research & Clinical Information Services in the selection of print and electronic resources for Bibby Library.

  • Develops and maintains the Bibby website.

  • Works with development officers to develop fundraising efforts and maintain relationships with donors.

Service to libraries, the university, and the profession:

  • Serves on appropriate committees or groups (within EIOH, Miner Libraries, Institute for Innovative Education, University of Rochester, Greater-Rochester region, national associations), as appropriate.

  • Represents Bibby & Miner in collaborations with local, regional, and national library associations.

  • Keeps current with issues and trends related to scholarly communications, publishing, and emerging information and data sharing services and innovations.

  • Contributes to the profession through active participation in conferences, associations, and research.

Qualifications:

ALA accredited MLS, or other advanced degree required; 2-5 years’ experience as a library professional or paraprofessional. Educational background in the biomedical or health sciences, experience in a health sciences environment, or equivalent is preferred. Expertise in online database searching. Experience with: wide variety of software applications; navigating the Internet; web development software; social networking tools and mobile devices; teaching adult learners; speaking fluently and persuasively before a group. Familiarity with current trends, standards, and emerging technologies in libraries and the web. Superior oral and written communication skills.
