This position requires active participation in ongoing research activities. The technician will work with the Lung Molecular Atlas Program (LungMAP) Biorepository at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The technician will learn principles of human histology, photomicroscopy, molecular biological assays and sample preparation, and will help to maintain a detailed inventory of samples, sample requests, and the processing for clinical research projects. The technician will need to communicate and work well with the study team and assist in troubleshooting minor problems. Demonstrates ICARE* values in each of the major responsibilities.
Strong self-organizational and problem-solving skills; the ability to plan and organize work and projects and meet deadlines; Flexibility to adjust to changing needs and schedules of lab projects; skill in verbal communication with coworkers and collaborators; attention to detail for the quality of produced work and keeping of records. Must be able to work in a team environment.
Associate’s degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer a college degree, or degree in process, in biomedical science.
Laboratory duties will require working in a modern biomedical research facility, with a large interdependent research staff, in the vicinity of properly contained chemical, biological and radiological materials.
Duties will necessarily involve working with human biospecimens, including blood samples, donated lung tissue and clinical data. This will require fine motor manipulations as well as familiarity with biosafety techniques and protection of health information (HIPAA).
All procedures and facilities conform to federal, local and institutional safety and ethical guidelines.
Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs as needed.
Primarily Day Shift, Monday -Friday however, schedule varies based on Laboratory needs. Will involve frequent weekends and occasional evening hours within 40 hour work week shared with laboratory study staff.
Supervision: The position reports directly to Lab Manager with frequent guidance by P.I.

Equipment: Computers, Biosafety Cabinets, pipetman, pipettors, assorted cold storage (Liquid nitrogen, -80deg, -20deg, cold room), needles, scalpels, tubing, microscopes, tissue culture incubators, autoclaves, centrifuges, fume hoods, flow cytometers, moxiflow, gentle macs, telephone, ice machine, pH meter, balances, label makers, bar code readers, printers, copier, scanner.

Assume, as a study staff member, responsibility for data collection, data entry, and data maintenance for the LungMAP project. Assist laboratory study staff with transfer of data from worksheets to database on critical portions of tissue preparation and inventory. Maintain detailed records of experiments.
Assist with various processing techniques to prepare the tissue for histology and in the performance of cell dissociation and culture
Assist in maintaining an inventory of the samples and filling sample requests
Process samples from clinical research projects as needed & assist with general lab maintenance of equipment, reagents and supplies.
