Manager of Instrument Services

Provides leadership and direct supervision to others in the repair, maintenance and tuning of orchestral and keyboard instruments, and oversees the issuing of orchestral instruments to registered students of the Eastman School of Music (ESM’s Instrument rental program). Provides direct technical support in the repair and maintenance of ESM and ECMS pianos/instruments, as well as providing artistic and teaching support at the professional level at Eastman School of Music. Position has administrative responsibilities, including monitoring of department expenses and development of annual capital and operating budget for the Instrument Office and is responsible for maintaining appropriate inventories of parts. Position must be able to visualize the global direction of the department related to school instrument needs and provide leadership, setting the tone for support of faculty and students. Acts as a liaison with community related to instruments.


General Management Supervision:

  • Directs and supervises the instrument repair and maintenance staff in performance of their functions at the Eastman School of Music. Evaluates performance, executes reviews, counsels and performs other personnel functions.

Instrument Management

  • Manages the Instrument office coordinator and directs the School’s student instrument rental program, including oversight of the issuing of orchestral instruments. Resolves student conflicts related to instrument issues.

  • Responsible for routine and complex instrument maintenance.

  • Manages the handling of new instrument acquisitions as well as old, rare and valuable instruments in Eastman’s special collections. Manages Eastman’s inventory of rare violins and facilitates their distribution to students and faculty members upon the recommendation of ESM String Department Chairs.

  • Supervises the work of maintaining and repairing the School’s 310 pianos.

  • Tunes and maintains a portion of the piano inventory. Maintains records of repairs, conditions of pianos, and equipment and parts inventory.

  • Supervises contracted organ technician support in their tuning and maintenance of all ESM owned organs: internal and off-site.

Financial Responsibility:

  • Prepares annual Capital and Operating budget for Instrument Office based on ESM instrument needs. Has budget oversight responsibilities for Operating budget, Gift fund accounts, Endowment accounts and Capital budget.

Communication, outreach and general support:

  • Maintains a collaborative working relationship with the Chair of the Piano Department and other ESM Faculty as appropriate related to continuing a dialog of performance needs and enhancing communication lines. Meets regularly with the Executive Director of Operations regularly related to operational operations. Participates as a member of the Administrative Team, attending regular meetings.

  • Orchestrates service support for the School’s various rebuilding projects or initiatives, oversees requisitions for materials and supplies, along with responsibility for all aspects of inventory management.

Special Events planning and coordination:

  • Coordinates all tuning and maintenance requirements of ESM owned keyboard instruments in concert with the needs of artistic faculty, visiting artists, and graduate and undergraduate students in the recital halls, teaching studios, practice rooms, and other venues outside of the Eastman complex.

  • Continually enhances and develops industry knowledge base. Liaison with outside manufacturing representatives, vendors, and technical representatives. Orients technical visitors to the facility.

Other Duties as assigned


Bachelor's degree in piano technology or related field, plus 3-5 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience with 2 years experience in management or business administration required.

7 years of experience preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $68,400 - $102,600 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
