Responsibilities

General Purpose:

Reporting to the Associate Director, Marketing Strategy , and the Director, Center for Advanced Research Technologies (CART) the Marketing Strategist, CART (MS) has four distinct roles:

  • The MS acts as the marketing and communications lead for the Center for Advanced Research Technologies. As such, the MS advises and supports leadership to ensure the effective implementation of marketing, outreach and communications plans with specific objectives and key performance indicators (KPI’s) consistent with the URMC strategic plan and SMD financial goals.

  • The MS articulates the business context, objective(s) and overall business needs for CART and provides recommendations for creative, messaging and/or media strategy to the Creative team, Content Hub staff and external agencies and vendors for the successful, timely and cost-effective implementation of plans. For this the MS provides clear and concise input, timely answers to questions, and coordination of video/audio/photography as needed. The MS acts as the project manager for marketing and communication plan components by establishing schedules, due dates and budgets. As the project manager, the MS follows up with the appropriate internal Content Hub and Creative Team staff and outside vendors and agencies to ensure timely and on-budget project completion.

  • The MS is responsible for communicating progress both in-person and through written management presentations in terms of campaign implementation and project status as well as campaign effectiveness based on plan objectives and key performance indicators to both the leadership of their assigned areas and to Marketing and Communications leadership.

  • The MS is responsible for business development and sales for CART. For this the MS will build and manage a client base, understand sales and sales cycles to develop strategies for outreach to acquire new clients

    The MS is highly knowledgeable about CART in terms of the types of services or activities provided (the “product”), the competition or obstacles hindering the achievement of objectives and the drivers of growth (i.e., provider referrals, direct-to-consumer promotion, etc.). At the same time, the MS applies his/her understanding of how marketing, outreach and communication can be employed to help the leadership of CART accomplish their objectives. Finally, the MS works closely with the Creative staff, Content Hub and outside agencies and vendors and has an understanding of their processes, methods, and expertise to help them effectively manage the projects during campaign and plan implementation.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Working with oversight from the Associate Director, and with latitude for independent judgment, the MS is responsible for:

    Business Support (20%)

  • Serves as a member of the management team(s) for CART and/or departments and other area(s) as may be assigned.

  • Contributes to the development and execution of the overall business strategy by partnering with the administrative leaders to identify, prioritize and develop marketing and business goals

  • Assists with providing support to departments for developing brand strategy, competitive intelligence, category trends, marketing strategy, program development, campaign development, reporting and analytics and marketing technology.

    Marketing & Communications Plan Development (20%)

  • Applies professional expertise to develop marketing and communications plans to achieve the objectives of assigned areas.

  • Develops integrated marketing and communications approaches to advance business goals. Collaborates actively across the Communications group (Marketing, Public Relations and Web Services) to strategize and conceptualize solutions that integrate outreach activity, creative concepts, new content and message placement in traditional and digital earned, owned, and paid media.

  • Applies best practices to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the delivery and evaluation of marketing services.

    Campaign Management & Reporting (25%)

  • Manages campaigns and projects to effective completion including initial strategy development, collaboration with the internal Creative and Content Hub teams and external agencies/vendors, review of work in progress, internal Communications team approval, presentation of concepts and work-in-progress to leadership, production and market implementation.

  • Manages a consistent workload of 10-30 active projects on a schedule and within approved budget parameters.

    Business Development & Sales (25%)

  • Identify new prospective customers through market research, data mining, networking, business associations and other means

  • Work with SMD Finance to meet sales target metrics

  • Develop strategies for outreach to acquire new clients

  • Develop a deep understanding of customers’ short-term and long-term needs

  • Timely follow-up and development of leads

    Professional Development (5%)

  • Pursues professional development by enrolling in internal or external ongoing professional education and attending appropriate local and national conferences. Stays abreast of current trends.

    Other duties as assigned (5%)

    Supervision / Direction:

    This position reports to the Associate Director, Marketing Strategy and Director, Center for Advanced Research Technology.

    Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, business administration or related field; 7 years of relevant progressively responsible experience required, preferably in the area of Marketing Communications; 10 years’ experience preferred; Master’s Degree preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in lead generation in sales desirable.

  • Interest in advanced scientific/biomedical technologies preferred.

  • 3 years of supervisory or management experience strongly preferred.

  • Experience in creating and implementing strategic communications plans with proven results.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in brief and plan document and presentation writing.

  • Strong organization and project management skills.

  • Extraordinary ability to deal with multiple, competing priorities with minimal supervision

  • Experience with data analysis and metrics preferred.

  • Ability to manage administrative projects, make sound decisions, and support design and implementation of new programs.

  • Ability to translate strategic plan concepts to creative and content direction to yield effective and engaging tactical solutions.
