Responsibilities

Position Summary:

With a high degree of skill, judgment and understanding of the principles and methodologies of histotechnology and related areas of surgical pathology, assist in the training of staff and residents in the preparation of tissue specimens for microscopic examination to include tissue processing, paraffin and plastic embedding, cutting and staining of fixed and frozen tissue. Coordinate laboratory activities related to the production of slides and control tissue for immunocytochemistry and research projects. May perform the duties of the immunofluorescence and electron microscopy technician, and may perform the duties of the Histopathology Laboratory Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor as needed.

Supervision and direction:

Under minimal supervision of the Histopathology Laboratory Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor, and the Director of Surgical Pathology.

Perform duties of the Histopathology Laboratory Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor as needed.

Instruments and equipment typically used:

Computer, cryostat, automated and manual microtome, tissue processor, stainer and embedding center.

Typical assignments and responsibilities:

  1. Under the direction of the Histopathology Laboratory Supervisor, train new staff and residents in all aspects of the preparation of tissue specimens for microscopic examination. Stays abreast of new procedures and laboratory techniques by participating in continuing education opportunities and re-trains when appropriate. 45%

  2. Under the direction of the Histopathology Laboratory Assistant Supervisor performs complex preventive maintenance on laboratory instrumentation including cryostats, tissue processors and embedding centers. 5%

  3. Assists in the planning of the daily and weekly staff schedule. 5%

  4. Coordinates laboratory efforts for research projects. 3%

  5. Performs and trains staff and residents in the preparation of STAT frozen sections. 5%

  6. Performs immunofluorescence of frozen sections of skin, oral and kidney biopsies as needed. Acts as back-up for the immunofluorescence and electron microscopy technician as needed. 2%

  7. With the Histopathology Laboratory Assistant Supervisor, enforces safety and environmental quality assurance protocols in the Laboratory. 2%

  8. Under the supervision of the Gross Room Supervisor/Pathologist’s Assistants, assist with grossing in small specimens. 10%

  9. Assists the Histopathology Laboratory Supervisor in the process of accurately billing for special stains. 3%

  10. Performs the duties of the Clinical Technologist III – Histotechnologist as needed. 20%

Qualifications:

The individual must be proficient in all aspects of histology laboratory practice with strong leadership skills and the ability to teach others.

Education:

AAS degree in a biological science plus 3-5 years experience in a histology laboratory or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Board Certification in Histotechnology. Must be NYS Licensed or eligible for NYS licensure.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $33.84 - $43.99 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
