The Creative Workshop Manager, MAG oversees all educational and programmatic aspects of the assigned area. This role develops and implements high-quality curriculum for adult and youth classes and supervises development and implementation of youth programs and camp experiences. The role focuses on tactics to maximize revenue, encourages program growth and meets enrollment and financial goals in support of the overall MAG mission and strategic plan. The supervisor leads the assigned team and works collaboratively with the Director of Academic & Comm Pgms to oversee operational aspects of the work and to set annual budgets assigned programs. The supervisor works collaboratively with the Marketing & Engagement Team to create a marketing plan and contributes to content of promotional materials. The role supervises and makes recommendations for hiring/firing the Youth & Community Programs Coordinator, Ceramics Program Coordinator, faculty and teaching assistants.


Creative Workshop Business Performance:

  • Establishes the vision for all curriculum (e.g. Adult/Youth Classes, Youth Programs/Camps, Family/Community Programs) that meet MAG's mission, market demands, and encourage growth of the assigned programs.

  • Directly develops and writes curriculum with an eye toward CW profitability for youth and adult art classes, schedules all classes and communicates offerings to all audiences.

  • Oversees curriculum development of assigned Programs to ensure a cohesive curriculum across all programs, classes and mediums.

  • Collaborates with program coordinators to directly develop and maintain program content based on market trends and the goal to grow student enrollment, market share and profitability. Utilizes customer data obtained from Altru to shape courses and curriculum. Coordinates and curates Burne Gallery art shows to relate to and support curriculum through an annual series of exhibitions featuring work of faculty and students. Supervises all aspects of show layout and labels, as well as installation of art work by Facilities staff. Coordinates all promotional initiatives for exhibitions with MAG PR/Marketing. Uses Burne Gallery shows as a way to market CW.

Creative Workshop Operations Management:

  • Ensures accurate updating and reconciliation of monthly ledgers. Monitors and evaluates revenue and allocates expenses. Maintains statistics on enrollment.

  • Within MAG guidelines, develops and works within an annual budget with consideration for maximizing growth. Track and maintain program budgets, and complete and submit financial request paperwork in a timely fashion; analyzes faculty salaries, course fees, room usage and profitability of all classes and programs to ensure goals are on target and propose correction as needed. May require coordination with MAG Advancement and contribution to grant writing or reporting.

  • Versed in and oversees all aspects of retail system (Altru) including inputting class, camp & program information; processing refunds; building registration questionnaires, etc. Must achieve proficiency in Altru within first 60 days of employment.

  • Oversees hiring/firing, paperwork, onboarding, staff training and scheduling for all assigned teachers and teaching assistants; approves payroll. Ensures staff reviews, provides support and audits classes for quality of instruction.

  • In partnership with Director of Learning/Academic & Community Programs, assists in established future direction of assigned program to realize its potential as the region;s premier museum-based art school.

Community Outreach on Behalf of Creative Workshop:

  • Manages MAG/Rochester City School District (RCSD) scholarship program. Coordinates process for awarding scholarships to students; provides statistical analysis for annual reporting.

  • In collaboration with curatorial, academic programs, and other departments and drives methods to integrate programming, curriculum into Gallery program or MAG events.

  • Actively represents programs in the community to build awareness, student base, market share, and to participate in the larger education fabric of the region. Networks with area artists, art educators, art administrators, and non-profit community service organizations to develop new programs and partnerships as appropriate.

  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with management, coworkers, museum patrons, volunteers, students, artists and community organizations to fulfill the mission of the MAG.

  • Collaborates with their supervisor and Director of Marketing to create marketing plan for products within a set budget. Approves ads, ad placement and CW public content on all platforms.

  • Evaluates effectiveness of marketing plan and adjusts to achieve maximum impact of marketing dollars. Oversees Coordinators contributions to course content for brochures or guides.

A Bachelor's Degree preferably in fine arts, arts administration, education (formal or informal) and/or project management required; Master's Degree preferably in fine arts, arts administration, education (formal or informal),project management and/or business administration preferred. 5 years of related work experience including at least 3 years in an administration/leadership role or the equivalent experience in business required or equivalent combination of education and experience; Experience in program management preferred. Required knowledge, skills and abilities: Skilled in a combination of art-related fields; administration, curriculum design, teaching, basic gallery curating; Excellent organizational and project management skills, attention to detail and follow-through; Strong management, planning, budgeting, decision- making and time management skills; The ideal candidate must be well-organized, enjoy creating schedules and coordinating logistics, have skills in project management, program development, budgeting, and be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously; Experience making budgets, forecasting and meeting set revenue target. Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities: The ideal candidate will have experience working in a museum, informal education and/or fast paced creative environment and have experience producing creative content, curriculum and team leadership; Dynamic, creative personality, with proven leadership ability; Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate collaborative and mentoring relationships, and to deliver feedback to others in a constructive manner; Effective communication (verbal and written) and listening skills; Supportive and engaged in equal employment opportunity principles with a focus on diversity; Confidence and interest in working with a wide audience (youth ages 2.5 to 17, adults 18+) across Greater Rochester community; Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint), experience with new media (Zoom, etc.) and databases (Altru's Blackbaud, etc.).

Pay Range

Pay Range: $45,800 - $64,100 Annualy

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
