The TAR/On-Call/Back Up Language Interpreter provides interpreting services for all clinical and professional University of Rochester Medical Center staff, patients and family members/significant others who are with the patient.
TAR hours (scheduled work) may be offered as per hospital needs and at the discretion of the interpreter and the Lead for Spanish and Foreign Language Interpreters. There is no requirement for the TAR interpreter to work a minimum number of TAR hours.
Specific Responsibilities
Completes scheduled training and other required staff activities. E 5%
Yearly mandatory online policy and procedure training
Yearly health updates
Attends interpreter staff meetings
Other training/activities as necessary
Completes all paperwork and administrative duties. E 5%
eRecord completed at the end of each patient interaction
Monthly Interpreter Availability calendar
Yearly certification update (if applicable)
Professional development transcript
Other paperwork as necessary
Performs clinical duties. E 90%
During TAR/Back Up shifts, interpreter carries a pager assigned by the hospital responding to all pages immediately.
Interpreter interprets all assignments, whether prescheduled or Back Up, in a timely and professional manner in accordance with hospital policy.
Supervision, Accountability, and Evaluation
Supervision
- The TAR/On-Call/Back Up Language Interpreter is supervised by the Lead of Spanish and Foreign Language Interpreter Services.
Accountability
The TAR/On-call/Back Up Language Interpreter is accountable to the Lead of Spanish and Foreign Language Interpreter Services for implementation of the job responsibilities set forth in this job description, adherence to Hospital and Social Work and Patient & Family Services policies, procedures and standards of interpreter conduct and adherence to the NCIHC Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
The Language Interpreter arranges coverage and contacts supervisor via pager if commitment to scheduled work cannot be fulfilled.
Evaluation
- An evaluation is conducted at the end of the first six months of employment, and annually thereafter by the Lead of Spanish and Foreign Language Interpreter Services.
Professional Qualifications
Experience interpreting in a health care setting is required.
Minimum of 48 hours training in Medical Interpreting preferred.
Certification by IMIA, CCHI, NCIHC or ATA preferred at time of employment or within 18 months of employment.
Bachelor degree strongly preferred.

Pay Range
Pay Range: $ 25.72 - $ 36.01 Hourly
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
