8 AM-5 PMResponsibilities
Provides technical knowledge in preparing instruments, equipment and supplies for surgical procedures and assists surgical team from the scrub position during an operation.
Prior to Surgery:
Set up and Maintain Sterile/Aseptic fields for procedures such as surgical extractions, bone grafts and other reconstructive procedures, arthrocentesis, endoscopic temporomandibular joint surgeries performed in the oral and maxillofacial surgical clinic. Prevent patient and/or surgeon from accidental cross-contamination of the surgical field
Prepare operatories in a timely and efficient fashion for a fast pace outpatient Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic. Anticipate required equipment/instrument trays that will be needed, based on scheduled procedures, with only minimal guidance from surgeons.
Demonstrate flexibility to adjust to various surgeons/ providers preferences for surgical instruments, surgical tray set ups and procedures.
Help to mitigate patient anxiety by explaining procedures to be performed by them, i.e. attach monitors, obtain vital signs, prepare and isolate a surgical field.
Review procedures with surgeon and assure that planned procedures are consistent with referral and consultation notes.
Capture Meaningful Use including, but not limited to social history, allergies to medications, fall risk, recent travels, vaccinations etc.
Participate in the “time-out” process prior for every procedure performed under local and moderate sedation, according to OMFS protocols.
Maintain effective airway management during surgical procedures, by providing jaw thrust, chin lift and assisting with bag mask ventilation if needed.
Appropriately place and re-place throat screen, suctioning effectively blood, irrigation solution and salivary secretions during surgical procedures, without blocking surgeons’ access to patient and without interfering with procedure performed. Provide jaw support during surgical procedures when indicated.
Place appropriate size bite block prior to initiation of the procedure and move it to next site in anticipation of the flow of the procedures to be performed.
Assist with emergencies that may occur during patient care that may include, but are not limited vasovagal/ syncopal episodes, airway compromise, hyperventilation etc.
Observe surgical field during procedures to ensure that no adverse injuries occur to parts of the oral cavity, such as teeth, lips etc. either by instruments malfunction (i.e. headpiece)or inadvertent use of instruments (i.e. dental forceps, dental elevators)
Obtain and record vital signs (BP, HR, RR, height and weight), attaching cardiac equipment, i.e. ECG leads.
Review post-operative wound care/discharge instructions, diet modifications/restrictions with patient and /or escort based on the procedures performed.
Demonstrate appropriate placement/replacement of gauze packing after surgical procedures when indicated to patient and/or escort.
Schedule follow-up appointments per direction of the surgeons.
Maintain OMFS operatories appropriately stacked, cleaned and organized in an ergonomic fashion that facilitates efficient patient care.
Maintain a log of # of uses of implant drills and arrange for appropriate replacement.
Utilize manufacturers’ catalogues and other on line resources to identify most competitive prices for products most commonly used in the OMFS i.e. surgical burrs, hemostatic agents, gauze etc.
Associates degree or equivalent plus two years of related medical or customer service experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology, procedures and computer experience preferred.
