Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The OP Expeditor is responsible for the accurate and timely sort and distribution of third party billing/claims and correspondence. Corrects insurance coverage on accounts prior to submission. The Billing Assistant will represent the department and hospital in a professional manner, protecting confidentiality of patient information at all times.

Supervision and Direction Exercised:

Responsible for monitoring own performance on assigned tasks against procedure standards. May train and coordinate activities of peers as directed by Operations Supervisor and Manager.

Machines and Equipment Used:

Standard office equipment, including but not limited to desktop computer, EPIC billing system, telephone, photocopy machine, 10 key adding machine, Microsoft Word, Excel and Email and a variety of payer web sites (e.g. MVP, ePaces, Omnipro).

Typical Duties:

Responsible for accurate and timely sort of daily paper claims run. Review information for accuracy, researches errors, corrects claim forms and records as necessary. Applies knowledge of computer system, rules and regulations governing the submission of third party claims and medical terminology. 25%

Sort, distribute and code the outpatient mail (including EOB’s and correspondence) 35%

  • Mail that belongs to other departments within the hospital will be forwarded using intramural mail

  • Mail that belongs to another team within PFS will be distributed to the correct team in this department. It will be coded with the rejection reason codes and forwarded to the Data Control team to be scanned into EPIC.

Responsible for accurate and timely correction of insurance on a wide variety of payers. 35%

  • Requires research involving EPIC RTE functionality and payer websites.

  • Knowledge of primary and secondary insurance rules and regulations.

  • Familiarity with timely filing guidelines.

Other Duties as Assigned 5%

  • May perform copying, filing, faxing, fill-in for other positions and any other duties of similar scope and complexity in regular combination with this position. Cross Train on team processes to enable assistance and fill in as needed

  • Process mail to be sent certified

  • Train new staff on systems: EPIC, Excellus, MVP and ePaces

Expectations:

  • Participate in department/team staff meetings, educational classes and training

  • Attend monthly department and team staff meetings

  • Stay up to date on HIPAA guidelines through education and reading monthly emails.

  • Participate in educational training such as Strong Commitment ICare and Annual Mandatory In Service

Qualifications:

Requires the ability to read, write and perform arithmetic, or equivalent, and 1 year of related experience.

Prefer an Associate’s degree in Accounting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
