Responsibilities

Summary

This position directly supports the electrophysiology service of Cardiology by providing remote/telephone monitoring of patients who have implanted devices such as Pacemakers and/or implantable defibrillators. The job involves teaching patients how to use a remote monitor following their implant surgery. Once the ECG data is obtained the technician must analyze it for proper device function. The accurate interpretation of this data requires in depth knowledge of pacemaker/defibrillator function, a highly complex and ever changing technology. Independent judgment is critical. The written interpretation is submitted to the MD for final approval and signature.

Responsibilities

Pacemaker duties:

  1. Set up new pacemaker patients for telephone monitoring:
  2. Obtain new pacer implant information from Pronto and complete chart with clinical data.
  3. Enter the patient data into GEMS computer program
  4. Teach patients in clinic how to use the monitor/explain the service. Schedule first call.
  5. Teach off-site patients how to use the monitor over the telephone.
  6. Facilitate the actual telephone pacemaker test:
  7. Contact the patient at the appointed date/time
  8. Complete the telephone test using the GEMS program, interpret and edit the test report. Requires extensive knowledge of pacemaker function/abnormalities.
  9. Schedule the patients for their next appointment.
  10. Follow up on abnormal test findings and battery depletions
  11. Reschedule patients that miss their appointments and document non-compliance in the medical record.
  12. Complete quarterly reports from several pacemaker companies (NYS law for device tracking).
  13. General office work:
  14. Print/Mail/process signed test reports to referring Cardiologist/physicians
  15. Pull charts for the next day’s schedule, file back when complete

Cardiac Event Monitor duties:

  1. Schedule patient appointments. Manage the patient waiting list and contact patients when machine is available
  2. Prepare chart
  3. Teach patients how to use the monitor in clinic
  4. Enter the patient in the GEMS program.
  5. Complete the telephone test using the GEMS program, interpret and edit the test report. Requires extensive knowledge of cardiac arrhythmias.
  6. Complete all paperwork required for billing, and submit to billing office
  7. Process/clean monitors that are retuned

Implantable Defibrillator (ICD) duties:

  1. Set up new ICD patients for remote service monitoring
  2. Obtain new pacer implant information from Pronto and complete chart with clinical data.
  3. Enter the patient into GEMS computer program.
  4. Teach patients in clinic how to use the remote monitor/explain the service. Schedule first call.
  5. Teach off-site patients how to use the remote monitor over the telephone.
  6. Collect remote data:
  7. Download data collected by remote service into GEMS
  8. Prepare Pronto note, and present to NP for interpretation.
  9. Copy completed reports, mail, fax, etc. to ordering MD.
  10. Track patient compliance and notify patient of missed appointment.

Qualification

AA or BS degree in medical related field, plus 2 years’ experience in a direct patient care related position, preferably Cardiology, or equivalent combination of education, on the job training and experience. Excellent word processing and computer skills necessary.
