GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

As a pharmacy technician provides specialized support to the inpatient pharmacy area with a focus on quality and accuracy, patient care, and customer service. Under supervision of a Pharmacist covering the team and consistent with state, federal and local regulations, coordinates and performs as necessary, technical functions of a pharmacy technician. Under general supervision by a technician supervisor, carries out functions associated with the role of a pharmacy technician.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDED BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Proactively monitor for drug shortages by reviewing ASHP & FDA websites and list serves as well as routine reports from wholesalers and manufacturers. Additionally uses GPO resources (weekly emails, shortage huddles, website, etc.) to identify new and potential shortage items.

  • Look for alternatives (from distributor and/or manufacturers) and informs pharmacy leadership (Supply Chain Directors or Clinical Directors) when clinical changes may be required

  • Places orders for critical medications and formulary meds to try to increase stock and reduce the need for selecting clinical alternatives. Manage the stock upon receipt to ensure visibility to staff and ensure medications are available when needed

  • Documentation of shortages with appropriate plan including updating the Backorders/Shortages Pharmacy website and providing a weekly update to pharmacy staff, as well as communication to pharmacy staff regarding acute changes in availability of medications.

  • Utilize vendors to procure short dated medications with significant cost savings and manage the stock to ensure proper utilization before items expire

  • Move medications throughout the hospital in automated dispensing cabinets to reduce waste. Return high cost medications that are decentralized and no longer on order. Move medications to high utilization areas.

  • Implementing action plan including:

  • Maximizing availability of products in critical areas, utilizing appropriate team pharmacists for input (e.g., movement within controlled access cabinets, to/from other pharmacy storage areas, floor-stock/emergency medication trays, etc.)

  • Notification to eRecord for requested changes based on the developed action plan

  • Document resolution of backorder situations and communicate to appropriate team members, facilitating reversal of the substitution as appropriate and under the direction of pharmacy leadership.

  • Participates in national or regional drug shortage-related initiatives (e.g. GPO, aggregation group, state or local efforts, etc.) intended to mitigate impact of shortages or share best practices.

  • Additional duties as assigned or role is expanded.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Exceeds the minimum requirements of all levels of the Technician Career Ladder.

  • Ability to work as a team or independently. Independent thinking and decision making skills a must.

  • Certification by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Must meet ongoing education requirements to maintain certification.

  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in hospital pharmacy, including experience with controlled access cabinets and inventory management

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite products (Excel, Word, SharePoint, Access) preferred
