University of Rochester Professor - 200941 in Rochester, New York
School of Medicine & Dentistry
The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), comprised of the Schools of Medicine & Dentistry (SMD), and Nursing (SON), wishes to recruit a Founding Chair to lead the School of Medicine and Dentistry’s new Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBI). The Department will recruit faculty to conduct research and teaching in biomedical informatics, and will serve as the academic home and campus hub for researchers who employ informatics as a tool in their biomedical research activities.
Major recent institutional investments have created an outstanding research data–driven infrastructure, exemplified by the Health Sciences Center for Computational Innovation, and recently announced $50 million University commitment to build the Institute for Data Science. It is expected that the new DBI will work to propel research in biomedical informatics through cross-disciplinary collaborations with faculty in the Institute. There is also the opportunity for synergy with URMC’s clinical programs, through the use of clinical data for research purposes, and by collaborating on clinical care improvement initiatives that are founded on big data.
The Founding Chair will report directly to the Dean of the SMD, and have the unique opportunity to define and grow a coherent identity and vision for biomedical informatics at URMC, a mission of great strategic importance for the university, that includes the development of degree programs in the discipline. The successful candidate will initially be provided with resources to recruit multiple new faculty members to be appointed to the DBI, as well as recruit existing faculty for secondary appointments in the DBI. In addition, he/she will be expected to provide strategic guidance in the recruitment of informatics researchers with primary appointments in other departments. Desirable candidates will have a demonstrated record of management, mentorship, and collaboration. Candidates will also be distinguished biomedical informatics scholars, with knowledge of clinical informatics and health systems, demonstrated research excellence, including an outstanding record of publication and grant support - and qualifications for the rank of full professor at the URMC.
The University of Rochester is an Equal Opportunity Employer and has a strong commitment to diversity; it actively encourages applications from groups underrepresented in higher education.
