This is position is located at the Center for Community Health & Prevention (CCHP), in the Emerging Infections Program (EIP). The EIP is one of 10 sites funded nationally by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to serve as a resource for the surveillance, prevention and control of emerging infectious diseases. The Research/Surveillance nurse will work closely with EIP colleagues, infection control staff, data managers, and others.
Under the guidance of the Principal Investigator, the Research/Surveillance Nurse serves as a consultant, educator, and researcher for various healthcare associated infection (HAI) surveillance and survey projects. Duties do not include patient care. The Research/Surveillance nurse will provide clinical knowledge to other EIP surveillance projects as needed.
HAI and Antimicrobial use Prevalence Survey
Investigates cases and completes case report forms for EIP surveillance projects by screening potential cases for eligibility and for identified cases, and abstracting data from medical charts. Acts as a consultant, educator, and researcher for various healthcare associated infection (HAI) surveillance and survey projects within the CCHP.
Submits protocols for IRB review and recruits facilities. The nurse will serve as the primary resource for the project coordinators assisting with the HAI projects. S/he will review the data collected, adjudicate discrepancies among data collectors and validate collected data based on experience and independent judgement.
Supports other EIP project coordinators with surveillance by answering clinical questions related to EIP surveillance
Facilitates the initiation of a hospital point prevalence survey of HAI and antibiotic use project; reaches out to IPs from area hospitals to recruit their facilities.
Submits new protocols continuation for prior studies to the IRBs.
Participates in CDC group conference calls and trainings if necessary.
Registered Nurse with at least 3 to 5 years of prior research experience and /or healthcare associated infection prevention or surveillance knowledge preferred.
A strong understanding of medical records and terminology and the ability to accurately abstract clinical data from a variety of medical record formats.
Familiarity with HAI definitions and infection prevention is desirable.
Requires valid NYS driver's license and ability to travel throughout the region.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written, and strong attention to detail.
This is a grant-funded position through 12/2021 and is likely to be extended.
