Position Summary:

The Quality Improvement (QI) Data Abstractor is responsible for data collection within the Comprehensive Stroke Center. The QI Abstractor completes chart review and data abstraction for Get with the Guidelines (GWTG) and other stroke-related quality data as needed. GWTG is a software program designed by Quintiles partnered with the American Heart Association (AHA) to help hospitals measure guideline adherence and improve quality for acute stroke treatment and prevention.


  • Review the charts of stroke patients admitted to the hospital (includes ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, TIA, and subarachnoid hemorrhage).

  • Completes Get with the Guidelines (GWTG) form for each patient with a critical eye for potential quality issues.

  • Assist with maintenance of stroke patient database at the discretion of Assistant Stroke Coordinator and Stroke Program Coordinator.

  • Complete post-discharge follow-up telephone calls for stroke patients discharged to home from Strong Memorial Hospital.

  • The transition of care telephone call is performed to identify any post-discharge issues and direct needed follow-up to the outpatient stroke clinic or other appropriate resources.

Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree Nursing and 2 years Project management, nursing, or other related experience required.

  • Master's degree preferred.

  • 1-2 years of nursing or health services experience, neuroscience experience preferred.

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations and standards required.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment required.

  • Data abstraction experience preferred. Quality assurance experience and computer skills beneficial required.

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Registered Nurse license in NY upon hire required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $66,602 - $93,205 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
