Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be challenged by a wide range of technologies employed on the fusion class OMEGA and OMEGA EP laser systems as well as collaboration with National Laboratories. These laser systems often demand designs that are high-precision, high-stability, and function in a class 100 cleanroom at either air or at vacuum. Design areas include laser system components, scientific diagnostic instruments, vacuum systems and cryogenic systems. The successful candidate must have a minimum of a BS in mechanical engineering and a minimum of 10 years of mechanical design experience.The job requires creative design with experimental and analytical approaches applied to research projects. The candidate must be able to work independently as well as function in a team environment interacting with leading fusion energy, nuclear, and plasma physics scientists.
Essential experience for this position includes:
Extensive experience with machine or instrument design
Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes (machining, welding, sheet metal, etc.)
Analysis skills including the ability to perform stress analysis of structures and bolted connections
Proficiency with 3-D CAD modeling including the generation of detailed drawings (Siemens NX preferred)
Generate design and requirements documentation
Desired experience for this position includes:
Opto-mechanical design
Electro-mechanical design
High vacuum and cryogenic systems
Kinematic constraint design (Exact Constraint)
Tolerance analysis
Finite element analysis (FEA, ANSYS preferred)
Proficiency in the detailing of drawings with the use of GD&T per ASME Y14.5M-2009
Vibration testing and analysis (Siemens LMS preferred)
Instrumentation and data acquisition
Design troubleshooting, testing, and qualification
Project management
