Responsibilities

SUMMARY:

Provides direct research and teaching support at the senior professional level by taking charge of all, complex research projects or by directly participating in a major aspect of a larger research project; and provides guidance to or directly supervises technicians, laboratory aides and professional staff.

SUPERVISION:

Position is supervised by faculty members, John Foxe, PhD, and Ed Freedman, PhD.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

30% With broad guidance as to research project objectives, is in charge of laboratory operations in support of small, complex research projects or in major aspects of larger research projects; or works independently in a phase of research of a complex project. Collaborates with investigators in writing protocols for the conduct of research which include: purposes of study, design of experiments, lists of materials and methods to be used and the schedule of activities. Assists faculty researchers in the design of research projects and in the preparation of research proposals. Organizes research activities in accordance with approved protocols.

25% Informs staff (laboratory aides, technicians, professional assistants) of their responsibilities in the project. Teaches laboratory techniques and instrumentation procedures to graduate students, research faculty and professional laboratory support staff. Counsels them on technical problems, advises and assists them with special research projects. Directs the gathering of research materials, supplies, equipment and apparatus and experimental subjects (e.g., laboratory animals). Independently operates complex scientific equipment with responsibility for developing critical research data. Designs or collaborates in designing sophisticated research equipment. Evaluates the performance of research equipment, making design changes or developing new approaches for its use.

20% Develops and installs operating procedures for the laboratory. Develops and modifies test methods; selects procedures for data collection and handling; develops or arranges for computer programs for conversions and statistical treatment of data. Analyzes and evaluates experimental data and interprets results within the scope of the study; assesses the importance of findings in relation to the general research program. Independently operates complex scientific equipment with responsibility for developing critical research data. Designs or collaborates in designing sophisticated research equipment. Evaluates the performance of research equipment, making design changes or developing new approaches for its use.

10% Prepares written reports on all phases of laboratory work involved in research projects, which become an integral part of the principal project report or are used in the publication of articles. Assists in the final writing of research publications.

5% Maintains contact with outside research laboratories, vendors and technical representatives concerning assigned area of research. Orients visitors to the laboratory.

5% Coordinates service support: repair of equipment, requisitioning of supplies and research materials and minor construction. Recommends expenditures for major laboratory equipment and construction. Authorizes expenditure for expendable supplies and maintenance.

5% Keeps abreast of trends in field of interest by studying current research literature, abstracting scientific articles of value in the prosecution of research problems and by attending meetings, institutes and seminars. Insures that health and safety practices are maintained in accordance with University policy and the law.

REQUIREMENTS:

Master's Degree or more than 5 years of professional experience in the field of assignment. With the equivalent of a Master's Degree in experience, training and education, 5 years in the field of assignment with some independent research experience; or an equivalent combination of experience, training and education.
