Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Supervisor and Laboratory Directors, works at the senior professional level by taking a lead role in the development of molecular assays within the Clinical Microarray Lab. Assist with validations, coordination of projects, development and monitoring of quality assurance and identifying opportunities for improvement.

Beyond mastery of standard laboratory protocol and methods, demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the theory, technical application, instrumentation and molecular aspects of clinical laboratory science and demonstrates thorough understanding of the clinical relevance of laboratory tests. Serves as technical consultant to medical personnel and other laboratory staff regarding laboratory procedures and interpretation of technical aspects of tests. Participates in the education of trainees and other staff (participation in lab rounds, medical technologist lecture series, etc.).

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED:

Reports to Lab Supervisor and Laboratory Director

EQUIPMENT USED:

Standard and complex laboratory equipment, office equipment, and PC and Lab Information System (LIS).

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads the development, maintenance and enhancement of molecular assays; performs test verification studies in accordance with NYSDOH submission packets, validations and writes procedure manuals and training checklists. Maintains written and verbal communication with supervisors and lab directors.

  • Compiles, analyzes and evaluates experimental data and interprets results

  • Along with Quality Assurance Coordinator, responsible for oversight of the quality assurance program for molecular assays: establishment of curves, limits of detection, quantification, calibration, verification, quality controls, reagent documentation, troubleshooting; ensuring that all aspects adhere to the established laboratory criteria, accurate performance, reliability and validity.

  • May assist in training of some laboratory personnel.

  • Investigates problems and initiates solutions either independently or in consultation with supervisor, as situation warrants. Keeps supervisor apprised of problems and actions.

  • Maintains contact with outside vendors and technical representatives concerning assigned area of research

  • Coordinates service support: repair of instruments, requisitioning of supplies and research materials.

  • Keeps abreast of trends in field of interest by studying current research literature

  • Assist in preparation for NYS/CAP inspections and audits.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in related science and at least 6 years of relevant molecular experience or PhD in related science with 3 years of relevant molecular experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. PhD preferred.
