Sr Academic Advisor

Advises MS students for the Simon Business School. As part of the Office of Student Engagement, assists with the planning of the key touchpoints in the student’s experience, with planned support for their academic and program goals. In addition, provides advocacy and crisis counseling as needed. Major elements include implementing and overseeing services and programs such as: Advising (Academic, Social, and Crisis) for the full-time programs, including interpretive counsel on requirements, policies, regulations, and standards; assisting students having academic difficulties, act as liaison between students and administration. Acts as advisor for international students between Simon School and the International Services Office. In addition, this role will provide specific academic operations support functions as needed.


Under minimal direction and with latitude for independent judgment:

50% Student Advising Activities:

Advises graduate students in MS programs in course selection, academic progress, academic problems including study team conflict and resolution, and any classroom issues affecting performance in the program. Facilitates communications and liaises between students, faculty, and other senior administrators. Provides information regarding Simon School and program requirements. Advises students on related University, College and departmental policy and guides students through academic processes. Counsels students on variety of issues related to their academic and graduate school experience and provides referrals for specialized assistance. Coordinates student withdrawals, medical leaves, or leaves of absence. Serves as primary point of contact for international students applying for US work authorization. Documents meetings and communications with students in internal department systems. Identifies emerging issues and recommends policy or procedural changes to staff and other senior administrators. Presents relevant student information to School’s Faculty Committees regarding curriculum changes and students on academic probation. Advises students on academic probation on Simon School requirements and resources and process to improve academic standing.

20% Student Life and Non-Academic Counseling:

Proactively works with students to identify growth opportunities and resources. In addition, counsels individual students on individual and group problems and social relationships. Refers students to various University services as needed.

10% Policy and Process:

Understands relevant policies and processes related to the student experience and Simon School overall. Carries out relevant policies, including managing all paperwork, per program need and student request. Guides students appropriately on Simon and University policies.

10% Student Engagement Strategy :

Organizes and conducts a full year of proactive outreach for students/programs that ensures timely and relevant program information, assessment and action planning, and appropriate engagement with leadership opportunities to support academic and career success. Hire, train, and supervise MS Peer Advisors.

10% Student Engagement clubs :

May be an advisor to student clubs, with specific roles and responsibilities to help the club achieve its goals. This will include nights and weekend activities, with the goal to strengthen the relationship between students and the school. Provide specific industry and content advice based on employee experience and expertise.


  • Bachelor's degree plus 5 years of related experience; 7 years of experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree in counseling or higher education preferred.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel). Willingness to learn new technologies as needed.

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Comfortable working with a diverse audience.

  • Strong verbal and writing proficiencies.

  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and competing priorities.

  • Strong accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and follow established protocols and procedures.

  • Experience working with an international student population would be an asset.

  • Ability to speak Mandarin a plus but not required.

  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends for student events is required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $54,808 - $76,752 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
