Sr Accountant

POSITION SUMMARY:
Creates tools to improve ability to manage department financial and operational activities through use of programming and in depth understanding of financial, operational and research administration. Researches, designs and build programs to efficiently and effectively manage the processes and functions of the finance and operations office. Assists with preparation of operating and capital budgets, and performs financial reporting and analysis across all activities for the department. Maintains current knowledge of University policies to ensure adherence. Monitors fiscal position of the Department’s chart of accounts.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Finance (75%):
Analyzes and interprets data, statistics and financial information and identifies significant differences in relationships among sources of information
Reconciles SMD’s main operating and capital accounts monthly and investigates any unknown transactions to potentially correct as necessary
Tracks SMD’s Research strategic plan by preparing monthly P&L, manage accounts and update tracker with quarterly spending
Assist with financial reporting in the Shared Resource Labs, including invoicing, financial projections and budgeting, among other duties
Assist with tracking of SMD’s capital budget
Performs analysis and tests to ascertain integrity of accounting data, account balances and timelines of reporting. Makes day-to-day interpretations and decisions on the accounting treatment of financial transactions.
Approval responsibility of first-level transactions affecting SMD and provides guidance for correction or application of manual transactions.
Assist in departmental URSpace update on an annual basis
Assist with 506 Bursar forms
Assist with administration of sponsored program receivables and maximizing clinical trial revenue
Identify Sponsored Award Receivables that are collectible, uncollectible and true grant deficits
Assist with the implementation of processes to maximize clinical trial revenue based on study criteria
Other duties as assigned
- Assumes responsibility for special projects involving research, planning and recommending changes. Assumes responsibility for the project, establishes time tables, activity plans and coordinates the effort of any necessary staff.
Operations (25%)
- Assumes responsibility for operational project management/special projects to support departmental operations and administrators. The areas will involve space planning, research dollar density, education and training.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
Minimum 3 years experience as a staff accountant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Strong analytical and organizational skills with keen attention to detail. Positive customer service attitude with strong communication skills. Shows initiative and resourcefulness in managing priorities and takes responsibility for accomplishing one’s own work while valuing data integrity and maintaining confidentiality of information. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook & Zoom software. Experience with UR accounting and payroll procedures preferred.
CLASP certification required within one year of start date.
