Sr BI Developer

GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Sr BI Developer is responsible for design, development, configuration, testing, implementation, maintenance, security of reporting and associated applications supporting the core University systems and applications. This person will also serve as a backup report administrator for the primary application tools. The SR BI Developer utilizes software to generate metrics and develops actionable recommendations. The analyst provides support to research teams or management by collecting and analyzing data and reporting results based on the needs of end users and collaborates with various functional teams based on their area of focus, and IT to achieve business results.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Proficiency:
Work with users to understand and document reporting requirements. Assist in the translation of the business requirements into report objects with appropriate security comprehended. Develop and enable solutions (reports, visualizations) to support the University’s goals.
Responsible for the design and development of executive reports as well as function specific reporting.
Develop and enable reporting solutions to interact with cloud-based solutions.
Writes adhoc queries and reports using various reporting/database tools to support research, financial, and executive initiatives.
Analyzes and synthesizes complex and diverse information gathered from senior management and end users to develop new reports and reporting systems as needed.
Design, develop and implement complex dashboard reports and visualizations for data warehouse and clarity.
Participate in the development and maintenance our environments that support the applications used for report writing.
Responsible for the development and support of strategies for warehouse implementation, data acquisitions and archive recovery.
Responsible for SQL queries and modifications to facilitate problem resolution and reporting needs.
Project Proficiency:
Participates in design sessions to capture requirements and data for report development.
Develops report specifications and ensures those requirements are met across all functional areas (e.g. procurement, finance, student, executive/University-wide etc.)
Translates business requirements into report objects with appropriate security comprehended.
Delivers solutions (reports, visualizations) to support the University’s goals.
Operational Proficiency:
Perform analysis activities and create/participate in the creation of the functional specification under the direction of more senior applications development staff.
Develops and maintains security architecture, security administration and workflow automation within the applications suite.
Prepares necessary paperwork and documentation to ensure conformance to departmental/university standards and procedures.
Executes unit tests. Works with application testers on the preparation of test plans, test data and integrated unit testing
Delivers executive reports as well as function specific reporting.
Writes reports using cloud-based data sets.

Supports development and maintenance of environments that support the applications used for report writing.
Education & outreach:
Supports the University’s communications outlets for reporting tools such as Upstate NY Tableau Users Group and Upstate NY IBM Cognos Users Group
Coordinate with other resources (programmers, analysts) to achieve goals and collaborate for solutions.
Maintains current knowledge of technology, equipment, and/or systems.
Performs other related duties, including presentation of seminars, courses and instruction on computer services as required. Participate in on-call, responding to application issues as they occur. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in related discipline such as Computer Science, Business, Mathematics, Statistics, Science or Engineering; 3+ years experience, with at least one year in a lead capacity required.
Master's degree preferred.
2 to 4 years’ experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified required.
Equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education required.
Experience in finance or higher education field preferred.
Experience with developing reports and dashboards with one or more Business Intelligence tools such as PowerBI, Business Objects, MicroStrategy, Qlik, IBM Cognos, and/or Tableau is required
Required Technical Skills:
Proficiency with reporting tools IBM Cognos and Tableau is preferred
Ability to learn new technologies quickly
Ability to translate business needs into solution requirements.
Good understanding of the basics of OO programming required.
Experience in the Oracle on Unix DBMS environments
In depth experience and developmental knowledge with SQL programming
Ability to provide on-call support as required.
1-2 years + Finance experience preferred, specifically with reporting
Required Business Skills:

Proven customer oriented approach to problem solving
Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and meet required deadlines
Ability to contribute both individually and as part of or technically leading a team
Preferred: Tableau Desktop Associate Level 1
Preferred: Workday Report Writer certificate
