Responsibilities

Position Summary:

To provide outpatient substance use counseling services to the young adult population under direct supervision as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team. The qualified candidate must possess the skills to treat both persons with substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring mental health disorders (COD), as well as their families and significant others. This includes participation in the intake process, as well as individual therapy and group therapy as needed. The Senior CDC may have direct supervisory or mentoring responsibilities for Counselor Interns and non-senior Counselors within the Strong Ties Program. The qualified candidate may be required to outreach into the community to meet the needs of the patient.

Responsibilities:

Direct Clinical

  • Participates as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, including intake evaluation treatment. Coordinates care management services for patients particularly within the various APP ambulatory programs, CPEP, PHP, SMH inpatient units, and the community.

  • Evaluates drug and alcohol usage and determines level of care needed.

  • Provides direct clinical services to assigned patients for ongoing evaluation as the patients’ primary therapist. Within this responsibility the therapist will conduct individual therapy to include family systems or significant other conjoint sessions and group therapy in the form of intensive process groups, specialty groups and aftercare groups.

  • Documents evaluation, disposition, level of care, and treatment in the patient's chart in compliance with APP, Strong Ties, Department, Hospital, and New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) policy.

  • May give lectures/talks on specific topics to patients and their families.

  • Communicate and collaborate with local agencies to ensure overall safety and wellness of patients such as CPS, school meetings, probation, justice center and more.

  • Participates in on-call activities of Strong Ties, including after hours and daily on-call, if necessary.

Indirect Clinical Activity

  • Ensures that Hospital, Department and Chemical Dependence Counseling policies and procedures are implemented with regard to professional practice, patient care, and disposition training.

  • Provides supervision and consultation to Interns as assigned.

  • Attends CDC Discipline and Program staff meetings.

  • Participates in the routine committee processes and complies with departmental quality assurance and staff development activities.

  • Sr. CDC will maintain well documented charts, meet regulatory requirements and timeframes as well as hospital wide documentation policies. The clinician will satisfy all yearly hospital based requirements.

Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in a discipline related to the human service field and 1-2 years of experience working with the adolescent and young adult population and their families is required. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. New York State certification as Credentialed Alcoholism Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) required. More than five years of related experience in drug/alcohol dependence treatment preferred.
